Exploring road safety through urban fabric characteristics and theory-driven prediction modeling with SEM-XGBoost
This study addresses the critical issue of road safety in urban environments, with a specific focus on the Greater London Area. Utilizing a novel, theory-driven approach, the study investigates the multifaceted impact of urban fabric factors on road safety, operationalized through a severity-weighted index of road accident frequency per capita. Through factorial analysis, six key factors (Urban Integration, Socioeconomic Challenges, Urban Ameniti…
Examining the roles of perceived neighbourhood environments in shaping social capital and the happiness of older adults in a super-aged Asian City
As society transitions into super-aged populations, new urban challenges, such as the mobility and health of older adults, have emerged. These challenges can significantly impact quality of life, potentially leading to reduced happiness and highlighting the need for evidence-based policies. Various disciplines have proposed innovative approaches to address these challenges, with land use policies increasingly emphasised in the urban and transport…
Urban Ecological Network Planning for Sustainable Landscape Management
The current trend towards promoting the conservation of ecosystems has resulted in various studies conducted to determine ways to establish an ecological network. As such, urban ecological networks challenge popular perceptions regarding green space planning and protection. They also emphasize the importance of green spaces as parts of an interconnected system for sustainable urban development. However, until now urban ecological networks have no…
The Cost to Firms of Cooking the Books
We examine the penalties imposed on the 585 firms targeted by SEC enforcement actions for financial misrepresentation from 1978–2002, which we track through November 15, 2005. The penalties imposed on firms through the legal system average only $23.5 million per firm. The penalties imposed by the market, in contrast, are huge. Our point estimate of the reputational penalty—which we define as the expected loss in the present value of future cash f…
