Teachers, traditions, and transitions
Planning education in Poland has developed within a fragmented institutional setting, creating uncertainty about where design-related competences belong and how they are taught. This paper verifies the place of urban design-focused training within planning programmes by examining how curricula and learning outcomes frame graduates’ capacity to make informed decisions on the built environment. Using a framework that integrates contextual, systemic…
The functional transformation and dynamics of industrial buildings in Central Europe on the example of Wrocław agglomeration from 1980s to 2020s
Following the post-1989 political transformation, industrial areas in Central European urban agglomerations experienced significant dynamism and large-scale change. Their distribution and, above all, the functions of buildings have evolved markedly. This study examines the scale and nature of functional transformations in Wrocław’s industrial areas. Its novelty lies in the use of quantitative analysis of building function changes based on cartogr…
Challenges in outsourcing local spatial planning in Poland
This study examines the systemic vulnerabilities of Polish local spatial planning under outsourcing to the private sector, focusing on the implications for the democratic decision-making process. Through critical legal analysis and semi-structured interviews conducted with 30 planning professionals, the research identifies six soft-spots in legal frameworks and procedural practices that undermine transparency, accountability, and public interest.…

Defining suburbanization in Central and Eastern Europe
Unravelling the paradox of spatial homogeneity
Processes of urban development progressing across Europe, with built-up areas expanding at a faster rate than the population, especially in the Central and Eastern Europe region. The importance of ensuring a high quality of urban life and effective environmental planning is widely acknowledged for the sustainable development of functional urban areas. While the literature extensively covers the implementation stage of monofunctional development i…
Between Architecture and Planning
Urban design, as an academic discipline, was born in the 20th century in response to challenges related to the planning, design, and renewal of urbanized areas. Since then, there has been an ongoing debate about the scope, scientific basis, and teaching formula of the discipline. The aim of this article was to assess the formula for teaching urban design at an academic level in Poland, considering global trends in this field. The theoretical fram…
