Rural transformation research
While the term rural transformation was first coined in the late 1960s, it is only recently that there has been a significant increase in interest in research employing this label. This particular corpus of research has evolved into a diverse body of literature. However, there is a lack of understanding of the academic landscape of this literature. The objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive and up‐to‐date review of the key characte…

The development of a new capital city presents complex challenges, especially in terms of the complicated bureaucratic flow in realizing an efficient, sustainable, and people‐centered smart city as the new identity of a country. Dynamics and Predictions of Urban Expansion in Java, Indonesia
This paper is situated within the discussion of mega-urbanization, a particular urbanization process that entails a large-scale agglomeration. In this paper, our focus is on urbanization in Java, Indonesia’s most dynamic region. We add to the literature by investigating the change and prediction of the land use/land cover (LULC) of mega-urbanization in Java. This research uses a vector machine approach to support the classification of land cover …
Living in a hot city
Jakarta's environmental problems, the increasing temperature, and the intensifying urban heat island effect (UHIE) add weight to the deteriorating quality of life in the city. Nevertheless, chronic exposure to heat, especially experienced by inhabitants in tropical cities, receives less attention. It is often seen as a low-onset event that requires no immediate action and is not as noticeable and apparent as other heat events, such as heat waves.…
Governing climate mitigation in a megacity
Given its sheer complexity and multi-level nature, climate change presents a new governance challenge for urban authorities and actors. By zooming in on the megacity of Jakarta, Indonesia, this paper aims at providing a more nuanced understanding of the forming of urban climate governance in a particular geographical context outside the elite roster of climate frontrunners. Our paper shows that Jakarta’s participation in the transnational cities …
Digital technology and smart village development in Banyuwangi, Indonesia
Advances in digital technology have increasingly influenced many aspects of our everyday life at different geographical levels. In this paper, we focus on rural areas as key geographical loci of development by investigating the notion of the smart village (SV). Our main objective has been to improve the understanding of the adoption of the SV concept in different geographical contexts by zooming in on the case of Banyuwangi, Indonesia. In doing s…
Gauging the possibility of using property tax to respond to the rapid expansion of built-up area in Depok Municipality
Over the last three decades, Depok Municipality has experienced rapid expansion of built-up area, due to the city’s strategic location as a satellite city of Jakarta that functions primarily as a dormitory town. Agricultural, plantation and vacant lands have been largely converted into different forms of built-up area. Some efforts should therefore be made to control this extensive land-use conversion. In particular, a fiscal instrument such as a…
Local institutional actors and globally linked territorial development in Bekasi District
Ever‐changing spatial divisions of labour have led to an altered integration of many developing countries into global production networks (GPNs), leading to new spaces of territorial development in these countries. Against this background, this paper examines the role of local institutional actors in co‐shaping territorial development driven by global industrial relocation. Drawing on the case of Bekasi District, Indonesia, this paper nuances the…

Probing the position of the Jakarta metropolitan area in global inter-urban networks through the lens of manufacturing firms
This paper presents an analysis of the position of the Jakarta metropolitan area (JMA) in global inter-urban networks. Our starting point is our aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of the JMA’s connectivity in world city networks (WCNs). To this end, we steer clear of top-down approaches, which tend to analyze cities in singular taxonomies of global prominence, and instead propose a framework that is attuned to the JMA’s contexts to provi…
