  • Introduction

    Open Access•Marlon Barbehön, Mareike Gebhardt•ARTICLE•Democratic Theory•2025

Time is among the most fundamental categories of political and, specifically, democratic life. While time in the sociopolitical world leaves traces in many (subtle) ways, we do not find it among the guiding concepts of democratic theory. This Special Issue, therefore, understands itself as part of a project that traces the centrality of time and temporality in democratic theory and practice. Our goal is to move toward an in-depth discussion of ti…

  • (Post-)Truth, populism and the simulation of parrhesia

    Open Access•Mareike Gebhardt•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Following tropes of light and dark in Amanda Gorman’s poem ‘The Hill We Climb’, the article explores, from a feminist perspective, who counts as a truth-teller. Against the backdrop of Hannah Arendt’s and Michel Foucault’s works on truth-telling, the article theorizes feminist modes of truth-telling. It scrutinizes truth-making in politics while unearthing the andro-centrism in truth-telling. Under the impression of post-truth rhetoric in recent …

  • ‘I Have No Clue About My Future (…) (if) I Stay Here or Not’

Open Access•Mareike Gebhardt, Matilde Rocchi•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2021

Against the backdrop of the concepts of vulnerability, liminality, agency, and resilience, this article presents findings from a participatory study with unaccompanied minors (UMs) who have been processed through the German reception system. Methodologically and epistemologically informed by both participatory research designs and postcolonial studies, the voices of eight UMs echo through this article, pushing these interlocutors beyond objectiva…

  • To Make Live and Let Die

    Open Access•Mareike Gebhardt•ARTICLE•Redescriptions Political Thought…•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The paper discusses the intricate power systems working within the current EU migration regime. It analyzes how constructions of sovereignty and vulnerability become both racialized and gendered to dehumanize the ‘migrant other.’ In a first step, Foucault’s study on biopower and the birth of modern sovereignty as the right to make live and let die is compared to Mbembe’s notion of necropolitics, shifting the focus from the management of (migrant)…

  • The populist moment

    Mareike Gebhardt•ARTICLE•Distinktion Journal of Social…•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 3

Populism of the twenty-first century, the paper argues, emerges from the aloofness of liberal democracy’s sober regimes of rationality. This results in political movements that are explicitly affective in their strategies, both on the right and the left of the political spectrum. However, while policy research claims that left- and right-wing populism ‘look alike’ (isomorphia), the paper shows that there is only one populist logic that exceeds de…
