The Albanians, the First Balkan War, and the Decisions of the London Conference of 1912–1913
This article examines the position of the Albanian National Movement during the First Balkan War, adopting a comparative and geopolitical approach. The Movement faced stark constraints, on the one hand from the collapsing Ottoman Empire, which was reluctant to recognize Albanian autonomy, and on the other from the Balkan League, which was eager to annex Albanian-inhabited territories. While both sides sought to instrumentalize the Albanians to se…
The role of the Albanian state in protecting Albanians in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (1920–1939)
This article analyses the Albanian state’s diplomatic, political and humanitarian strategies in response to the repression and colonization of Albanians within the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (1920–1939). Drawing on archival sources and contemporary diplomatic records, it argues that Albania pursued a pragmatic policy that combined symbolic protest, humanitarian aid and international advocacy to protect its ethnic kin beyond its borders…
The Clash Between Albanian Nationalism and the Ottoman Empire Over the Albanian Language, from Tanzimat to 1912
This paper examines the clash between Albanian nationalism and the Ottoman Empire, focusing on the role of the Albanian language from the Tanzimat reforms to 1912. The Tanzimat period marked significant political and educational reforms within the 19th-century Ottoman Empire, where elementary education was primarily conducted in religious languages, hindering the development of a unified Albanian national consciousness. This study employs histori…
The annexation of Kosovo by Serbia in 1912–13
This study investigates key issues surrounding the First Balkan War, Serbia’s invasion of Kosovo, and the subsequent annexation of the region. Employing a qualitative approach through historical documentation analysis, it addresses the following: international recognition of Serbia’s annexation, the Serbian government’s treatment of annexed territories’ citizens, and the significant Albanian uprisings that followed. The findings suggest that Serb…
The Confrontation Between Albanian Nationalism and the Ottoman Empire in the Period of the Albanian League of Prizren (1878–81)
Impact of the British Bible Society and the American Board of Commissioners for foreign missions in the Albanian cultural awakening
Recent research on the history of Albanian education development has not sufficiently reflected the contribution of British and American Protestant missions. These missions aimed to translate the Bible into Albanian and promote its readership through school courses. Although the activities of the British Bible Society and the American Board were conducted in cooperation with prominent activists of the Albanian National Renaissance, this collabora…
The Kosovo Demonstrations of 1981 and the Redefining of the Albanian Question
This analysis considers the impact of the demonstrations that occurred in Kosovo in spring 1981. They shocked Federal Yugoslavia and re-opened the Kosovo question as an issue in European and international diplomacy. They simultaneously intensified and consolidated the Albanian national movement in Kosovo, although activists held differing views as to the best solution to the problem. Another result of the demonstrations was a deterioration in Alb…
The Policy of Serbian Expansionism, with Specific Reference to Albanians in the Decade Preceding the Balkan Wars
The Balkans at the end of the nineteenth century was in flux. The Eastern Crisis, the Treaty of San Stefano and the Congress of Berlin had established a new political geography in the region that was fated not to hold for long. Here were intertwined the interests of the Great Powers and the newly established Balkan states. The Ottoman Empire which had controlled the region for centuries was in terminal decline. The newly established states suppor…
The Kosovo Issue and Albano–Yugoslav Relations, 1961–1981
The Yugoslav Federation never satisfactorily resolved the problem posed by the Albanians of Kosovo. Emerging from a period of intense repression, Kosovo in the 1960s and 1970s underwent rapid political development, including the creation of autonomous political institutions. The Kosovo issue was directly affected by developments in Albano–Yugoslav relations—themselves subject to events in the wider world—and by internal developments within Yugosl…
