  • Assessing the link between social capital and health outcomes in the Italian regions

Open Access•Maria Alessandra Antonelli, Giorgia Marini•ARTICLE•Annals of Public and Cooperative…•2025•References: 6

An extensive literature demonstrates a positive relationship between social capital and health. However, empirical analyses within the Italian context remain limited. This study contributes to the existing literature by expanding the empirical evidence on this topic for Italy, employing an ecological approach. Using data from 21 territorial units (19 regions and the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bozen) over the period 2011–2019, the study ex…

  • Do hospital mergers reduce waiting times? Theory and evidence from the English NHS

Open Access•Vanessa Cirulli, Giorgia Marini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Behavior &…•2025

We analyse — both theoretically and empirically — the effect of hospital mergers on waiting times in healthcare markets where prices are fixed. Using a spatial modelling framework where patients choose provider based on travelling distance and waiting times, we show that the effect is theoretically ambiguous. In the presence of cost synergies, the scope for lower waiting times as a result of the merger is larger if the hospitals are more profit-o…

  • Do environmental crimes contribute to air pollution? Empirical evidence and effects on health

Open Access•Anna Rita Germani, Giorgia Marini et al.•ARTICLE•Economia Politica•2024•References: 2

This paper investigates the effect of environmental crimes on ambient air pollution in Italy, using annual provincial data over the period 2010–2016. While the impact of ambient air pollution on health has been the focus of a significant amount of literature, a nascent body of works is focusing on the impact of illegal behavior on environmental quality. Our work is ideally divided in two steps: firstly, we identify and assess empirically the pote…
