Energy, surplus and the economic process
This paper analyses the economic process through the concept of surplus, combining insights from ecological economics, Marxist political economy and anthropology. Humans, we argue, appropriate surplus energy with their labor from nature and apply it to transform matter into goods and services, with entropy increasing along the way. How societies distribute and expend their surpluses gives them some of their signature features. In hierarchical soc…
Sustainable design of multiscale CO2 electrolysis
The present study utilizes a value sensitive design (VSD) inspired approach to contribute to the design and implementation of CO2 electrolysis (CO2E) within the framework of carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies, which convert CO2 into valuable products. The focus of this study is on a low technology readiness level (TRL) technology, yet likely relevant to reach climate neutrality by 2050. We examine the perspectives of stakeholders a…
Energy ethics in the assessment of local renewable energy projects
Beyond the urban shift
Degrowth is coming of age, and its analysis of what can be called degrowth spatial politics is advancing rapidly. In this article, we attempt to unravel the history of spatial thought in the degrowth literature to reveal its tendencies, tipping points, and blank spots. We argue that the more recent degrowth spatial literature overly focuses on the big urban scale by reversing what has purportedly been one of the weak spots of degrowth scholarship…
Sustainability of local renewable energy projects
Local energy projects have been associated with several benefits for the local community like social cohesion, economic gains, new skills, and environmental awareness. Yet, there is limited research on whether the projects fulfill their sustainability promises, and how the local community perceive the benefits. This research introduces a novel framework to assess the success of a local renewable energy project based on the perceptions of the loca…
From local island energy to degrowth? Exploring democracy, self-sufficiency, and renewable energy production in Greece and Spain”
The energy sector is at the center of the current economic system, and of literature and activism on degrowth, which questions the sustainability of current models of energy use. Local and small-scale energy systems may have the potential to reduce energy and resource consumption and to advance degrowth-related ideals of energy democracy, self-sufficiency, and local production. In the present paper we link a discussion on degrowth and local energ…
