Female genital mutilation/cutting experiences and attitudes among women from countries with high prevalence of FGM/C living in the United States
Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices for Care of Women and Girls With FGM/C - A Survey of Health Workers at Swiss University Hospitals
The impact of cumulative trauma on health service utilization practices of Black immigrant women
Cumulative trauma experiences were positively correlated with health service utilization, and discrimination strengthened this relationship. Future work must examine long-term data for patterns of seeking health services over time, explore specific types of health services associated with cumulative trauma experiences, and study associations between health service usage and health outcomes
Centering Equity and Fostering Stakeholder Collaboration and Trust—Pillars of the Maternal Health Innovation Program in Maryland
Objective: To describe two main pillars of the Maryland Maternal Health Innovation Program (MDMOM): (1) centering equity and (2) fostering broad stakeholder collaboration and trust. Methods: We summarized MDMOM's key activities and used severe maternal morbidity (SMM) surveillance and program monitoring data to quantify MDMOM's work on the two pillars. We developed measures of hospital engagement with MDMOM (participation in quality improvement […
Reliability and validity of a perinatal depression screening instrument in rural Mali
Background: , in rural Mali. Methods: We administered a locally adapted screening instrument containing items from the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-25) to 180 pregnant women and mothers of children under age 2 in Sélingué, Mali to assess the instrument's psychometric properties and validity. Item Response Theory was used to develop an abbreviated version of the measure and the validity and psych…
Risk, Harm, and Prevention of Female Genital Cutting in the U.S
Factors Associated with Health Care Provider Attitudes, and Confidence for the Care of Women and Girls Affected by Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting
Background: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a cultural practice that includes procedures that intentionally alter or cause harm to female genital organs for nonmedical reasons, affecting ∼200 million women and girls globally. Health care providers in the United States often lack confidence to provide appropriate FGM/C-related care, and experience attitudes that may negatively impact quality of care for FGM/C. Methods: We conducted a …
Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting among Somali Women in the U.S. State of Arizona
Achieving respectful care and outreach to women affected by FGM/C has contextual complexity. However, the clinical implications and insights provided may have broader impacts on advancing health equity for FGM/C-affected women
Assessing the reliability and validity of attitudes and confidence scales for the care of women and girls affected by female genital mutilation/cutting

Dusukasi—The Heart That Cries
Perinatal mental health problems such as depression and anxiety are prevalent in low and middle-income countries. In Mali, the lack of mental health care is compounded by few studies on mental health needs, including in the perinatal period. This paper examines the ways in which perinatal women experience and express mental distress in rural Mali. We describe a process, relying on several different qualitative research methods, to identify unders…
Female Genital Cutting
Before the war we had it all”
There is little evidence about family planning knowledge, attitudes, and use among couples in post-conflict Democratic Republic of the Congo. We used qualitative descriptions to analyze data from 75 participants. Intimate partner violence (IPV) was common among participants. They were aware of family planning methods; however, IPV and fears of side effects were barriers to use. Although participants were concerned about the cost of large families…
Matroniya
Our team explored the lived experiences of rural auxiliary midwives, or matrones, in Mali. Since matrones attend more births than all other health workers combined, they are critical to efforts to reduce maternal mortality. Currently, their experiences are not well understood. This study used interpretive phenomenology to describe the experiences of seven matrones. We suggest that matrones provide a vital connection between traditional approaches…
