  • Vulnerability of US dairy farms to extreme heat

Open Access•Jared Hutchins, Marin Skidmore et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2025•Cited by: 1

  • Cattle supply chain fidelity in the Brazilian Amazon: Key considerations for deforestation monitoring

Open Access•Marin Skidmore, Marcos Barrozo et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Supply chain governance (SCG) is an increasingly important approach to man- age environmental protection and human rights in agricultural systems across the tropics. SCG helps relay the preferences of international consumers to producers and fills environmental policy gaps. Brazil’s Zero-Deforestation Cattle Agreements (CA) are one of the longest-standing examples of SCG but shortcomings in implementation have reduced their conservation impacts. …

  • Sustainable intensification in the Brazilian cattle industry: The role for reduced slaughter age

Open Access•Marin Skidmore, Marin Elisabeth Skidmore et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

The cattle industry in the Brazilian Amazon causes vast deforestation while producing at only one-third of the sustainable capacity. Slaughtering cattle at a younger age directly increases production per hectare per year, all else equal, and provides a potential path for sustainable intensification. Here we show that slaughter age is decreasing in the Amazon biome, but this increase in productivity varies across space and throughout the cattle su…

  • Cattle ranchers and deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon: Production, location, and policies

Open Access•Marin Skidmore, Marin Elisabeth Skidmore et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 5

Deforestation for cattle production persists in the Brazilian Amazon despite ongoing efforts by the public and private sectors to combat it. The complexity of the cattle supply chain, which we describe in depth here, creates challenges for the landmark Zero-Deforestation Cattle Agreements in particular and for enforcement of deforestation policies in general. Here, we present a holistic analysis that is increasingly relevant as the number of poli…

  • Prisons and Covid-19 Spread in the United States

Kaitlyn M Sims, Jeremy D Foltz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Objectives. To empirically evaluate the relationship between presence of a state or federal prison and COVID-19 case and death counts. Methods. We merged data on locations of federal and state prisons and of local and county jails with daily case and death counts in the United States. We used a selection-on-observables design to estimate the correlation between prisons and COVID-19 spread, controlling for known correlates of COVID-19. Results. We…
