  • Crop Diversification, Household Welfare and Conflict

Open Access•Hayatullah Ahmadzai, Oliver Morrissey•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2025•References: 31

We use three waves (2011–2012 to 2016–2017) of nationally representative repeated cross section surveys to study the impact of crop diversification (number of crops grown) on household welfare, measured by real adult equivalent consumption and food expenditure and dietary diversity, in Afghanistan. Diversification is very low (almost half grow only one crop and fewer than a fifth grow three or more crops) but increased during the period. A multin…

  • The impact of sand and dust storms on agriculture in Iraq

    Hayatullah Ahmadzai•ARTICLE•Middle East Development Journal•2023

Sand and dust storms are a common natural hazard in arid and dry areas of the Middle East and North Africa severely affecting human life and economic sectors, including agriculture production. In this paper, I explore the potential impact of sand and dust storms (SDS) on agricultural sub-sectors in Iraq by combining the household-level production and socioeconomic data with the climate dataset to allow the empirical assessment of agricultural imp…

  • Hope for Change

    Open Access•Hayatullah Ahmadzai•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this article, I present empirical evidence on the extent of crop diversification and assess its merits as a strategy for improving production efficiency in Afghanistan. The transformed Herfindahl–Harshman index is used to measure the scale and magnitude of crop diversification. I find a compelling evidence that diversifying production portfolios significantly improves production efficiencies. This finding is critical, given that the data show …
