Sex- and site-specific, age-related changes in bone density – a Terry collection study
lumbar vertebra and three scans from the femur. The associations between the age, sex and bone density were analyzed. We were able to detect age-related bone loss in both vertebra and femur. It was observed that men tended to lose more bone density on the vertebra, whereas bone loss in women was more pronounced in the femur. We speculate that differences to modern and earlier archaeological populations are related to the major lifestyle differenc…
Neuropathology consultation rates in medico-legal autopsies show substantial within-country variation—a nationwide Finnish study
There are little data on the rates of neuropathology consultations in medico-legal autopsies. This Finnish study characterized regional differences in neuropathology consultation rates between 2016 and 2021.Overall, 1 in 40 autopsies (2.5%) involved a neuropathology consultation. The consultation rates of Southwestern Finland and Åland were 1.5 to 9.4 times those of other regions. Our findings may reflect regional differences in conventions and poli…
Educational Gradients Behind Medical Adverse Event Deaths in the US—A Time Series Analysis of Nationwide Mortality Data 2010–2019
Background Deaths due to medical care appear common. Individuals with low socioeconomic position seem to be at a higher risk for sustaining a medical adverse event and premature death. This time series analysis aimed to assess educational gradients behind adverse event deaths in the US over the period 2010–2019. Methods Publicly available mortality and census data were retrieved from official sources. The data included age, sex, educational attai…
Modeling the Multidimensional Predictors of Multisite Musculoskeletal Pain Across Adulthood—A Generalized Estimating Equations Approach
Background: Multisite pain is commonly chronic and often lacks its initial role as a potential tissue damage signal. Chronic pain among working-age individuals is a risk for disability and imposes a major burden on health care systems and society. As effective treatments for chronic pain are largely lacking, better identification of the factors associated with pain over working years is needed. Methods: Members of the Northern Finland Birth Cohor…
Sociodemographic Indicators of Birth Rate in a Low Fertility Country–A Nationwide Study of 310 Finnish Municipalities Covering > 5,000,000 Inhabitants
Background and Aims: Declining fertility is a key driver behind the rapid aging of populations worldwide. Finland has experienced a 25% decline in fertility from 2010 to date and ranks low even on the European and Nordic scales. This study aimed to address the association between sociodemographic indicators and birth rate (i.e., live births relative to total population) in Finland. Methods: Open data on 310 Finnish municipalities were retrieved f…
Sociodemographic Indicators of Child and Adolescent Mortality in Finland—A Nationwide Study of 310 Municipalities Covering Over 5,000,000 Inhabitants
Background: The reduction of child and adolescent deaths (defined as decedents aged 0–19 years) remains a crucial public health priority also in high-income countries such as Finland. There is evidence of a relationship between socioeconomic gradients and child mortality, but the association is considered complex and relatively poorly understood. Exploiting a Finnish dataset with nationwide coverage, the present study aimed to shed light on the s…
Improving anatomical stature estimation method. The relationship between living stature and intervertebral disc thickness
Anatomical stature estimation methods reconstruct stature for skeletal specimens by adding up the heights of skeletal elements contributing to stature. In addition, these estimations factor in a certain amount of soft tissue known as "soft tissue correction". Our study focuses on the relationship between living stature and one of the major soft tissue contributors to stature: the intervertebral disc thickness/height. The purpose of this study was…
The association between knee breadth and body mass
OBJECTIVES: Body mass estimation from skeletal dimensions is a useful tool when studying archeological human samples. Bony articular surface dimensions of the lower limb have frequently been utilized to estimate body size. In the present study, we investigated the association between knee breadth and body mass in a Northern European population. Our study aimed to confirm both methodology and results presented in earlier studies. MATERIALS AND MET…
