Improving cancer incidence evaluation through local government area matching
We found lower age-standardized incidence rates than those reported earlier for the Edo state population. Collecting information on the local government areas of the cancers allows better matching with the respective target population. We recommend using LGA information to improve the evaluation of population-based cancer incidence in sub-Saharan countries
Trends and predictors in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in diabetic and reference populations during 21 years of follow-up
Background Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a markedly higher overall mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD), as well as many other causes of death like cancer. Since diabetes is a multisystem disease, this fact together with the increased lifespan among individuals with diabetes may also lead to the emergence of other diabetes-related complications and ultimately to diversification of the causes of death. Methods The study populati…
Effect of intervention on decision making of treatment for disease progression, prostate‐specific antigen biochemical failure and prostate cancer death
BACKGROUND: Patient preference for the choice of treatment modality for prostate cancer has increasingly gained attention. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of client-oriented decision on long-term mortality, disease progression and biochemical failure compared with standard treatment protocol (TP). METHODS: With data from a Finnish multicentre, randomized controlled trial with two arms [104 in the enhanced patient participation (EPP) arm and 106 i…
P2-19 Mobile phone use and location of glioma
Introduction The risk of brain tumours related to mobile phone use has been assessed in several studies without conclusive results. As the radiofrequency field emitted by the phone depends strongly on the distance from the source, any effect should be highly localised and occur mainly in the part of the brain absorbing most of the energy. We assessed the distance from the exposure source (typical location of mobile phone when in use) and the mid-…
Radon in homes and risk of lung cancer
OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of lung cancer associated with exposure at home to the radioactive disintegration products of naturally occurring radon gas. DESIGN: Collaborative analysis of individual data from 13 case-control studies of residential radon and lung cancer. SETTING: Nine European countries. SUBJECTS: 7148 cases of lung cancer and 14,208 controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Relative risks of lung cancer and radon gas concentrations in…
Measuring social class differences in cancer patient survival
STUDY OBJECTIVES: Estimation of cancer patient survival by social class has been performed using observed, corrected (cause specific), and relative (with expected survival based on the national population) survival rates. Each of these measures are potentially biased and the optimal method is to calculate relative survival rates using social class specific death rates to estimate expected survival. This study determined the degree to which the ch…
