(De)carbonizing energy? Strategic para-coloniality and counter-hegemonic space-making in China’s expansion into Latin America
This article examines China’s expanding presence in Latin America’s energy sectors through three contrasting cases: Brazil’s Pré-Sal offshore oil, Peru’s Las Bambas copper mine, and Ecuador’s Coca Codo Sinclair hydropower plant. It introduces the concepts of strategic para-coloniality and spatial counter-hegemony to analyze how Chinese state-led interventions simultaneously challenge Western dominance while operating through extractive logics for…
Rights of Nature and World Order
Rights of Nature (RoN) have emerged as a transformative strategy to address contemporary socioecological crises. Over the past two decades, RoN have gained traction as national laws and court rulings have increasingly recognized ecosystems as legal entities, capturing global interest. While existing research explores RoN across jurisdictions, their potential to contest dominant world orders—rooted in Western, anthropocentric, and capitalist logic…
Transcultural bioeconomy governance in a plurinational state
This article studies the notion of Sumak Kawsay as an Indigenous way of life and political project informing the normative fundament of the plurinational state of Ecuador. How does Sumak Kawsay shape the relationship between bio-based practices in Kichwa territories of Ecuador and the country's emerging bioeconomy policy? To address this question we study the production of two culturally meaningful products with an agroforestry base in two Kichwa…

Authoritarian power and contestation beyond the state
Research on authoritarian connections beyond the state requires a transregional practices approach. This special issue is an invitation to combine critical approaches to the study of authoritarian power by paying attention to spaces of contestation, authoritarian practices, as well as nonstate actors and agency below and beyond the scale of the state. We focus on authoritarian practices and their spatial and temporal articulations in (1) transregio…
Authoritarian practices between ‘para-coloniality’ and ‘cheap security’
How does Chinese state capital operate in the neoliberal setting of Peruvian mining? The article tackles this question by focusing on Las Bambas, a large mine in the Andean highlands of Apurimac. We argue that China’s quest for Peruvian copper entwines state capital with neoliberal and authoritarian practices of state violence in a case of ‘para-coloniality.’ This concept explains how Chinese mining operations build on and reproduce the legacies …
Explanations of the political gridlock behind international circular economy
China and the European Union (EU) signed the first international circular economy (CE) agreement shortly after China issued the ‘Waste Ban’ (WB) on the import of 24 categories of solid waste. While the WB gained global attention, limited research addresses its political implications for international CE. Based on 72 expert interviews, 52 documents and participant observation, we study political WB narratives and corresponding perceptions of ‘Chin…
“Contingent power extension” and regional (dis)integration
In this article, we explore the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a case of “Contingent Power Extension” (CPE) towards the European Union (EU), assessing its implications for regional (dis)integration in the latter. CPE is a conceptual prism that interprets the BRI as a polymorphous, dynamic, and context-specific mechanism through which Chinese foreign policy elites intend to convey, amplify, and legitimize the regime’s power-reach into other reg…
Cooperative counter-hegemony, interregionalism and ‘diminished multilateralism’
Endstation China
