  • Legacies of Past Land Use

Open Access•Anna Schneider, Thomas Raab et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Reconstructing (pre‐)historic land use distribution is essential for understanding past human societies and their impacts on the environment. Various land use forms result in distinct alterations of surface morphology, which are often well preserved but rarely described within forest areas. The interpretation of LiDAR Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) can greatly enhance our insight into the geoarchaeological records of woodlands. This study examin…

  • Land Use Legacy Landforms at the Unesco Heritage Site Tarnowskie Góry, Upper Silesia, Poland—Stratigraphy, Soils and Age

Open Access•Alexander Bonhage, Thomas Raab et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2024•Cited by: 1

Metallurgy in Upper Silesia (Poland) has a long tradition of international significance, which was emphasized in 2017 when the historic silver mine in Tarnowskie Góry was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area consists of various anthropogenic landforms, the stratigraphy of which has hardly been studied so far. In this study, we describe five main morphological units: Unit I (RCH) and Unit II (RCH pit), resulting from charcoal produc…

  • Multi-Period Ore Exploitation in Upper Silesia, Central Europe

Ireneusz Malik, Marcin Bohr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 21

We studied the abandoned mining field in southern Poland using high-resolution lidar images to distinguish the number of mining shaft remains and their morphological diversity. We identified 13,864 remains of mining shafts of various sizes (2–30 m in diameter) and diverse levels of denudation. This allowed us to select 13 mining shafts for detailed study. The radiocarbon dating of charcoal and peat from the shafts indicate three phases of exploit…

  • Feasibility of pXRF to evaluate chosen heavy metals in soil highly influenced by municipal waste disposal—A monitoring study of a former sewage farm

Open Access•Magdalena Sut‐Lohmann, Shaghayegh Ramezany et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2022

Sewage disposal onto agricultural land may result in the high accumulation of organic wastes, which questions the applicability of typical elemental analysis used for the soil components. To monitor the contamination status of agricultural soils at a former sedimentation basin, after the long‐term cessation of wastewater irrigation, 110 locations (15–20 cm depth) and 4 boreholes (up to 100 cm depth) were sampled to determine pH, loss on ignition,…

  • Automated large‐scale mapping and analysis of relict charcoal hearths in Connecticut (USA) using a Deep Learning Yolov4 framework

    Open Access•Wouter B Verschoof-Van Der Vaart, Alexander Bonhage et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 13

In the past decade, numerous studies have successfully mapped thousands of former charcoal production sites (also called relict charcoal hearths) manually using digital elevation model (DEM) data from various forested areas in Europe and the north‐eastern USA. The presence of these sites causes significant changes in the soil physical and chemical properties, referred to as legacy effects, due to high amounts of charcoal that remain in the soils.…

    Open Access•Alexander Bonhage, Mahmoud Eltaher et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2021•Cited by: 14•References: 11

Due to complicated backgrounds and unclear target orientation, automated object detection is difficult in the field of archaeology. Most of the current convolutional neural network (CNN) object‐oriented detection techniques are based on a faster region‐based CNN (R‐CNN) and other one‐stage detectors that often lack adequate processing speeds and detection accuracies. Recently, the two‐stage detector Mask R‐CNN technique achieved impressive result…

  • Austauschverträge mit Drittbeteiligung

    Thomas Raab•BOOK•Austauschverträge mit Drittbeteilig…•2020

The system of contractual law is based on the relationship between two parties, the debtor and the creditor. However in the present-day economic systems, in which there is a more widespread division of labor, more and more contractual relationships are linked together, at least in economic terms, due to the fact that the debtor avails himself of another person or typically of another company in order to fulfil his obligation. Thomas Raab examines…

  • An initiative for a morphologic‐genetic catalog of relict charcoal hearths from Central Europe

Open Access•Florian Hirsch, Anna Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The increasing availability of high‐resolution topographic data, coupled with image analysis and machine learning techniques, is rapidly changing the way archaeological sites are digitally identified and mapped. We present a catalog of common forms of relict charcoal hearths (RCHs) in Central Europe to improve the evaluation of morphologic and genetic features in future mapping approaches. RCHs are important historical landscape features created …

  • Large‐scale mapping of anthropogenic relief features—legacies of past forest use in two historical charcoal production areas in Germany

Open Access•Anna Schneider, Alexander Bonhage et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 4

With the increasing availability of high‐resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), large‐scale mapping of anthropogenic relief features has become feasible for more areas. However, the landscape‐scale distribution patterns of anthropogenic landforms and the quality of DEM‐based mapping can be highly heterogeneous. In this study, we mapped relict charcoal hearths (RCHs) in two study regions with differing environmental backgrounds, covering fore…

  • Reconstruction of a Palaeosurface and Archaeological Site Location in an Anthropogenic Drift Sand Area

    Open Access•Anna Schneider, Florian Hirsch et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2017•References: 15

Knowledge of the position of archaeological remains in the surface relief provides important basic information for archaeological survey design and interpretation. Geomorphological processes in (pre)history may have resulted in a modification of the local relief around archaeological sites, especially in areas that are prone to sediment erosion and relocation, such as sheet sand and dune landscapes. In this study, we reconstructed and analysed th…

  • Architecture of relict charcoal hearths in northwestern Connecticut, USA

Open Access•Thomas Raab, Florian Hirsch et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 2

Relict charcoal hearths are round or elliptical earthen platforms up to 11 m in diameter and a widespread feature of historical industry that supplied charcoal used in the production of iron in furnaces or smelters. The iron industry dominated Litchfield County, Connecticut, and surrounding areas in the northeast United States throughout the 19th century, peaking in ∼1850. The large number of charcoal hearths in this region is a relic of >150 yea…

  • What is it like to be a geologist? A phenomenology of geology and its epistemological implications

    Thomas Raab, Robert Frodeman•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Geography•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 1

In previous work we have described the nature of geologic reasoning and the relation between the geological observer and the outcrop which is the object of their study. We now turn to further consideration of the epistemological aspects of geology that have been largely neglected by twentieth century epistemology. Our basic claim is that the experiential facts of geological field work do not fit with a philosophy of science that has evolved out o…
