  • The Geoarchaeological Context of Early Holocene Human Occupation at the Cerro Pedregoso Site, Cedros Island, Mexico

    Open Access•Loren G Davis, Matthew R Des Lauriers et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2025•Cited by: 1

Geoarchaeological excavations at the Cerro Pedregoso site on Cedros Island, Baja California, Mexico, uncovered a stratified alluvial fan deposit containing well‐preserved evidence of repeated human occupation during the Early Holocene, between ~12,000 and 9600 cal BP . We used radiocarbon dating of wood charcoal and marine shell from multiple excavation units to establish a secure chronology for these early coastal forager occupations. These cult…

  • Yuman Rebels of Antigua California

    Antonio Porcayo‐michelini•ARTICLE•California Archaeology•2022•References: 9

Archaeological studies conducted in the north of Baja California document a series of peculiar settlements in Yuman territory, as in the case of site MRA 21, given their relative inaccessibility where human life under current climatic conditions is unsustainable. Radiocarbon dating and evidence from the colonial period when invasion of the Yuman territory began (A.D. 1769) show that indeed there was subjugation of indigenous people, but also demo…

  • Spring tides, storm surges, and the destruction of coastal middens

René L Vellanoweth, Antonio Porcayo‐michelini et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2020•References: 9

This study used photogrammetry to analyze digital video taken before and after a new moon perigean spring tide that caused extensive damage to archaeological sites along the Upper Gulf of California coastline, south of San Felipe, Baja California, México. We created a 3D digital surface model (DSM) and orthophoto of the Conchero 4 site, a large multicomponent shell midden and sand dune. Results showed mass wasting (∼100 linear meters and ∼1500 m3…
