  • Technologies of Transition

    Open Access•Mattia D’Acri, Maria Verde et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026

The following paper investigates ceramic production and signs of specialization in Rome and the wider region during the early first millennium bce , through an archaeometric approach using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA), and complementary techniques. A total of 274 ceramic samples from six archaeological sites —four in Rome (Sant'Omobono, Caesar's Forum, Regia, and Palazzo Canevari), Gabii, and San Giovenale—were analyzed using NA…

  • Arianna's Palette

Open Access•Maria Verde, Alberto De Bonis et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2026•Referências: 43

The House of Arianna, also known as the House of Colored Capitals, represents, with its 1700 m 2 of floor space, one of the most majestic examples of a residence within the Pompeii archaeological site. The research developed within the project “Cultural Heritage Active Innovation for Sustainable Society—CHANGES” reports the outcomes of the archaeometric study of polychrome wall paintings that decorate Room Number 6 of the Domus of Arianna. To ach…

  • Provenance and first technological insights of African amphorae from the Roman Forum of Cumae, Southern Italy

Open Access•Michela Scanu, Filippo Barattolo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•Referências: 52

African trade routes with Cumae in the Late Roman period, focusing on the Forum area. • Attribution of the specimens to specific workshops via petrographic comparison. • Technological aspects of the amphorae and investigation of possible raw materials sources. The aim of this work is to define the provenance and the production technology of nineteen samples of African Amphorae found in the forum of the ancient Cumae in the Bay of Naples. These ma…

  • Decoding Capua’s roof terracotta

Open Access•Maria Verde, Alberto De Bonis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

The main focus of this study was to examine 25 samples of archaeological ceramic materials currently preserved in the Archaeological Museum of the Ancient Capua and Mitreo investigated in the framework of an international project. These samples primarily consist of architectural terracotta from the Fondo Patturelli extra-urban sanctuary, as well as architectural terracotta, pottery and waste material from the nearby Alveo Marotta furnace. To inve…

  • Unveiling the distinctive geochemical signature of fine ware through Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes

Open Access•Maria Verde, Alberto De Bonis et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

This study explores the use of three isotopic systematics—Sr, Nd, and Pb— combined together for the first time to trace the origins of ancient pottery. This approach strengthens our ability to relate raw materials to the final products. The materials selected for the analysis are from a well‐documented data set, previously subjected to a thorough mineralogical–petrographic and chemical characterization. Seventeen ceramic specimens represented by …

  • Archaeometric Characterisation and Assessment of Conservation State of Coins

Open Access•Sabrina Pagano, Giuseppina Balassone et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

The paper presents the first archaeometric results on a selection of ancient Roman coins (antoniniani) from a treasure found in the Roman necropolis area of ancient Cumae (Southern Italy) during archaeological campaigns by the Centre Jean Bérard. A multi-analytical approach consisting of non-destructive techniques (stereomicroscopy, FESEM-EDS, pXRF, Raman, μ-CT) was implemented on the better-preserved coins of the treasure in order to investigate…

  • Minero‐petrographic characterization of fine ware from Cales (South Italy)

Open Access•Maria Verde, Alberto De Bonis et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2023•Citada por: 1•Referências: 45

79 samples of black glazed pottery, Terra sigillata, fine common ware, and production indicators were recovered in the archaeological site of Cales and investigated via a multi‐analytical program (polarized light microscopy, thermal analyses, XRPD, XRF, FESEM, FESEM‐EDS). Among the materials, finds of important production indicators, represented by welded pieces of black glazed pottery and spacers, attest a local production. Polarized light micro…

  • Focusing on red and black engobes in Roman pottery from Cumae (southern Italy)

Open Access•Francesco Izzo, Antonella Ciotola et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Referências: 12

  • Minero-petrographic investigation on Roman pottery found in a dump in the workshop area of Cumae (southern Italy)

Open Access•Maria Verde, Alberto De Bonis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Citada por: 5•Referências: 10

  • Multianalytical investigation of wasters from the Tower 8/Porta di Nola refuse middens in Pompeii

Open Access•Vincenza Guarino, Alberto De Bonis et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Citada por: 6•Referências: 8

A total of nine representative pottery fragments belonging to ferruginous, carbonate, and thin‐walled wares were recovered in refuse middens outside the fortification wall of Pompeii and subjected to a program of multianalytical operations (thermal ionization mass spectrometry, X‐ray fluorescence, X‐ray powder diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy–energy‐dispersive spectrometry techniques, optical microscopy). The fragments bear manu…
