There’s an App for That? Ethical consumption in the fight against trafficking for labour exploitation
Among the market-based strategies being used to fight trafficking for labour exploitation are apps aimed at encouraging ethical consumption. Such apps have surfaced in tandem with the increased involvement of businesses in anti-trafficking efforts and the promotion of social entrepreneurism. In this article, I describe and critically analyse three apps aimed at individual consumers, arguing that they do little to actually address labour exploitat…
Child brides or child labor in a worst form
In this article, we argue that the early and/or forced marriage of girls under 18 should be understood, in part, as an exploitive form of child labor. We describe the types and conditions of labor that are commonly experienced by child brides and we examine the strengths and weaknesses of current international laws to adequately address the issue. We also argue that the problem of child brides should be addressed by the International Labour Organ…
Globalising service-learning in the social sciences
The increasing internationalisation of social science curricula in undergraduate education along with the growth of service-learning has provided new opportunities to join the two. This article offers a reflection and discussion of service-learning with placements in international nongovernmental organisations (INGOs), drawing from its application in an undergraduate globalisation course in the United States. I argue that service-learning can be …
The global development of contemporary anti-human trafficking advocacy
Efforts to combat human trafficking have grown in the last few decades, with states, international governmental organizations (IGOs), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working around the world to address the trade of people under conditions of force, fraud or deception for the purpose of exploitation. How has contemporary anti-trafficking advocacy developed globally and why? Competing approaches in global and transnational sociology - worl…
What in the World Are Anti-Trafficking NGOs Doing? Findings from a Global Study
While the academic literature on human trafficking has grown enormously in the last 20 years, few studies have been done that empirically examine the organizations taking part in anti-trafficking responses. This article reports some findings of a study of 1,861 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) worldwide that identify themselves as working on the issue of human trafficking. The findings show that anti-trafficking NGOs have a wide variety of sp…
The Politics of Trafficking
This work reveals how the first international movement to combat the traffic in women struggled to achieve its goal of protecting women due to conflicts among reformers and the presumed necessity of women's sexual labor for nation-state and empire-building.

The trouble with trafficking
Human Trafficking
In the last decade, human trafficking has emerged as a new area of research for sociologists and other scholars across a wide range of fields. Globalization has exacerbated the illicit trade of people and their parts within and across territorial borders, generating concern among activists and academics and prompting the development of a burgeoning literature with varying concerns and viewpoints. This article reviews what we know about human traf…
International Voluntary Associations, Local Social Movements and State Paths to the Abolition of Regulated Prostitution in Europe, 1875–1950
The literature on globalization and social movements emphasizes the ability of international non-governmental organizations to influence states and foster domestic social change. This article examines the dynamics of this process in an early international movement to combat prostitution in the late 1800s. Why did reformers succeed in their goal of abolishing the state regulation of prostitution earlier in some countries compared to others? A qual…
