Effects of socioeconomic status on right-wing voting intentions
Low socioeconomic status (SES) individuals vote for left-wing parties on economic grounds and right-wing parties on cultural grounds, while high SES individuals exhibit the opposite pattern. Various psychological mechanisms may explain this pattern. Using data from 9 European countries ( n = 8,750), we quantified the mediating role of economic system justification, economic and symbolic threats, anti-immigrant attitudes, and national identificati…
Public Communication about Science in 68 Countries
This 68-country survey ( n = 71,922) examines science information diets and communication behavior, identifies cross-country differences, and tests how such differences are associated with sociopolitical and economic conditions. We find that social media are the most used sources of science information in most countries, except those with democratic-corporatist media systems where news media tend to be used more widely. People in collectivist soc…
Inequality and Status Anxiety
Economic inequality has been proposed to be linked to lower subjective health and well-being through enhanced status anxiety, but evidence is mixed. We propose that the effects of economic inequality on status anxiety, health and well-being depend on how people perceive it and how threatening it is to them. This paper analyses the effects of perceived economic inequality—in general and in everyday life—on status anxiety, health and well-being, an…

Constructing Talent and Flexibility in Focus Group Discussions on Inequality and Unemployment in Greece
This article examines the ways in which participants construct talent and flexibility in accounts of income inequality and (un)employment in Greece. Eight (8) focus groups with forty‐one (41) Greek citizens, aged 18–65 years were conducted. Analysis used the principles of Critical Discursive Social Psychology (CDSP). Participants were asked to evaluate the compensation that should be given to employees from different professional categories and t…
Nostalgia and Biculturalism
Individuals who have been exposed to and internalized two cultures vary in the degree to which they perceive their cultural identities as compatible (bicultural identity integration; BII). An experiment tested whether nostalgia, an emotion that is prevalent among bicultural individuals, influences BII and does so via acculturation orientation toward the host culture. Participants were originally from Greece, living in other European countries. We…
Collective disadvantage in the context of socioeconomic crisis in Greece
Group‐based anger might take different forms depending on the target that is directed at. In this research, conducted in Greece ( N = 470), we distinguished between two types of group‐based anger in the context of socioeconomic crisis: Anger directed towards the international system and anger directed towards the local politicians. We showed that politicians‐directed anger is better predicted by the mere perception of collective disadvantage, whe…
Powerless people don't yell but tell
Expressing anger can engender desired change, but it can also backfire. In the present research we examined how power shapes the expression of anger. In Study 1, we found that powerless individuals were less inclined to express their anger directly but more inclined to express it indirectly by sharing it with others. Powerless participants’ reluctance to express anger directly was mediated by negative social appraisals. In Study 2, we replicated …
Two Countries in Crisis
European identity is currently facing important challenges. From the beginning, European identity has been related to the national identities of Member States with different economic strengths. The recent economic recession made these disparities salient across countries. In this research conducted in two countries with relative low status in the European Union (EU), we explored whether the perceived disparities in wealth between the countries of…
