The future of group analysis and psychotherapy in the era of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly advanced across diverse domains, notably healthcare and mental health. It has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st-century, ranging from virtual assistants and recommendation systems to autonomous vehicles and clinical decision-support tools. As AI becomes increasingly woven into everyday life, it offers extraordinary opportunities for innovation and widened access to ca…
Homophobic and racist gang violence and the rise of fascism
This article aims to offer both theoretical and practical insights for clinical engagement with male adolescents exhibiting violent behaviour in the context of gang involvement. My objective is to equip clinicians with conceptual tools to address the myriad of complex issues associated with gang violence, particularly in relation to the contemporary rise of alt-right populist movements that propagate abhorrent homophobic, misogynistic, and racist…
The sexual abuse of boys and men. The erasing matrix
The aim of this article is to contextualize, and add, some theoretical and practical scaffolding to our work with men and boys who have suffered from various forms of sexual abuse. This article introduces the concept of the ‘erasing matrix’ in terms of an anti-group relational system and shows how the perverse group dynamics at its core facilitate sexual trauma in terms of selection, grooming and sexual destruction of victims. I describe via case…
Gay men and extreme sexual practices in the era of chemsex and online digital dating platforms
Chemsex is a phenomenon in which, typically, gay men take very powerful and high-risk psychoactive drugs while having sex, often without a condom, otherwise known as bare backing. This frequently, but not exclusively, occurs in a group sex context in a residential or a commercial sex on premises establishment. This use of chemsex can lead to increased rates of HIV transmission, sexual and physical assault, a significant impact and corrosion of me…

The impact of homophobic trauma on gay men
This article is based on a presentation I made to a Group Analytic Society International (GASi) event on ‘The Impact of Homophobia on Mind, Body and Soul’ in May 2021. Much of what I discuss applies to gay women and people who are transgender. However, I will foreground the experience of gay men because I have more clinical and personal experience in this field. I provide a working definition of homophobia and how it impacts on the psychological …
The contamination of trauma. Traumatized minds, broken families and dysfunctional work groups
Professional work groups engaging with traumatized and dysfunctional families are presented with a disproportionate challenge to an already inevitably painful process that can be an obstacle to balanced decision-making in the children’s best interests. Trauma, abuse and neglect can influence the professional culture that condenses around these families. This occurs more often with the most challenging families with a possible history of professio…
Working with the trauma of racism in groups in a time of white supremacy — erasure, psychic ghettoization or bearing witness
This article addresses the complex issues when working with group members who have been traumatized by institutional and inter-generational racism in the context of white supremacy. The article engages with how a group analytic understanding can assist clinicians to engage with group members who have experienced racial trauma and structural oppression when these dynamics are inevitably generated in psychotherapy groups. I discuss the concepts of …
The psychodynamics of lynch mobs
This article engages with human groupings when they are operating at their very worst. These are human groupings enacting a particularly insidious, enduring and specific set of ‘othering’ dynamics that occur within and between in-groups and out-groups. This is known as lynching and these vicious and destructive human groupings are known as ‘lynch mobs’. I attempt to bring a psychodynamic lens to explore the complex issues that constitute the part…
Psychodynamic intersectionality and the positionality of the group analyst
This article proposes the concepts of psychodynamic intersectionality and intersectional group analysis by addressing the complex issues of the positionality, or self-location, of the group analyst when working with diverse and intersectional patient groups who have been traumatized by structural oppression, institutional and inter-generational othering. I critique the positionality of the group analyst and the essential intersectional and inter-…
Meeting need and achieving sustainability in water project interventions
This paper reviews common reasons postulated for the failure of many externally funded projects to improve the water supplies of people in poor rural areas of developing countries. Analysis of survey data from Tanzania shows that villages most in need of water supply improvements are unlikely to benefit from short-term interventions based on ‘dig-install-depart’ models. Excess availability and low value placed on labour in poor village communitie…
