Impacts of a puberty and period education intervention among 9- to 12-year-old girls in the New York metropolitan area
Findings from our educational intervention demonstrated that a simple distribution of an illustrated puberty and period book, without the support of formal instruction, had positive attitude shifts and educational impacts among girls ages 9-12 years. The intervention was efficacious in improving knowledge, particularly among girls who had not yet experienced their first period. Follow-up is needed to assess long-term health and social impacts of …
Young Men’s Perspectives on Menstruation in New York City
This study sought to contribute to the minimal evidence on what boys across the United States learn about menstruation in and out of the classroom. Boys’ knowledge and understandings of menstruation may influence their own lives, shape the menstrual-related experiences of girls and women who they interact with, and contribute to ongoing menstrual stigma. We conducted a qualitative research study utilizing in-depth interviews with 22 Black and His…
Exploring the availability and accessibility of menstrual friendly public toilets (MFPTs) in urban spaces
There is a significant gap in the provision of MFPTs in urban centers. Further research is needed to understand the extent of challenges related to accessibility, structural amenities, and availability of MHH-related resources, and how they can best be addressed. Our study's findings underscore the need for the prioritization of MFPTs in public spaces to ensure all individuals have equitable access to manage their menstrual cycles

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status and Women’s Mental Health
There is limited knowledge on the relationship between neighborhood factors and mental health among displaced disaster survivors, particularly among women. Hurricane Katrina (Katrina) was the largest internal displacement in the United States (U.S.), which presented itself as a natural experiment. We examined the association between neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) and mental health among women up to 10 years following Katrina (N = 394). W…
Binge Drinking and Depression Symptoms as Risk Factors for Teen Dating Violence Among Sexual Minority Youth

Methods Cross-sectional survey data collected from a nationally representative sample of SMY high school students in the United States in 2017 and 2019 through the national Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) (n = 3,4…
