  • Bidirectional Relationships Between Family Communication Patterns of Adolescents' Negative Emotions and Problematic Technology Use: A Random Intercept Cross‐Lagged Panel Model Analysis

Open Access•Zhonghuang Su, Li Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2026

INTRODUCTION: Despite evidence linking parenting with adolescent technology use, research has seldom examined their bidirectional longitudinal associations and the specific role of emotion-related communication-a key aspect of family communication central to adolescent adjustment-in adolescents' technology use remains under-examined. To address these gaps, this study explored the relationships between adolescents' problematic social media use and…

  • Balancing Self- and Other-Orientations in Parental Emotion Socialization Goals and Implications for Child Development in China

    Open Access•R Ding, Y D Xie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2026

Emotion socialization goals (ESGs) refer to parental expectations and aspirations for their children’s emotional development. This research aims to explore what ESGs are held by contemporary Chinese parents, and how different ESGs relate to parental emotion-related socialization behaviors (ERSBs) and child outcomes in China. Three empirical studies were conducted. In Study 1, parents’ ( n = 150, 78% females, 36–57 years old) written responses to …

  • Types of parental social comparison and links with adolescent psychological outcomes

Open Access•R Ding, Shiqi Yin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2026

Parental upward social comparison of children is prevalent in China and has often been recognized as a negative parenting practice. However, social comparison theory suggests that comparison can serve adaptive functions, such as fostering motivation and supporting learning. To reconcile this, we propose that there exist critical and encouraging comparisons, with the latter potentially linked to fewer maladaptive outcomes in adolescents. To test t…

  • Network Analysis of Parental Responses to Children's Negative Emotions and Adolescents' Socioemotional Development

Open Access•Yanchun Xu, Xingying Li et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2026

13.62 years, 50.73% male). Analysis of PRNCE networks revealed that both maternal and paternal networks exhibited connections among different types of responses. In both maternal and paternal networks, punitive responses had the highest centrality. Analysis of bridge networks connecting PRCEN and adolescent emotional/social outcomes showed that parental responses related to adolescents' emotional and behavioural development differed based on the …

  • Modelling nonlinear moderation effects with local structural equation modelling ( LSEM ): A non‐technical introduction

Open Access•Tuo Liu, R Ding et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2025

Understanding the differential strength of effects in the presence of a third variable, known as a moderation effect, is a common research goal in many psychological and behavioural science fields. If structural equation modelling is applied to test effects of interest, the investigation of differential strength of effects will typically ask how parameters of a latent variable model are influenced by categorical or continuous moderators, such as …

Open Access•Zhonghuang Su, Shuangshuang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2025

The open communication about adolescents' emotions between parents and adolescents is pivotal, as it helps adolescents to understand and manage emotional experiences. Utilizing longitudinal data, we aimed to explore whether maternal supportive or nonsupportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions could predict the communication patterns of adolescents' emotional distress (CPAED) between parents and adolescents. Two hundred Chinese adolesce…

Open Access•Hanghang Xu, Yuxue Qi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2025•References: 6

Effective emotion regulation is critical for adolescents' psychological well-being, yet how parent-adolescent communication patterns predict adolescent emotion regulation-and vice versa-remains underexplored, particularly in Chinese culture where parenting roles are gendered. The present study examined bidirectional associations between communication patterns of adolescents' emotional distress in parents and adolescents and their emotion regulati…

This study examined whether mothers' and adolescents' emotion regulation strategy was linked with their own and each other's depression using the actor–partner interdependence model (APIM). The part…

  • The Effects of Moral Self-Regulation on Prosocial Behavior and Rule Infraction: The Effects of Moral Self-Regulation on Prosocial Behavior and Rule Infraction

Gu Li, Hui Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2013
