At the time it closed in 1947, Middlesex University School of Medicine (MUSOM) in Waltham, Massachusetts was one of the few American medical schools that did not restrict the enrollment of Jews, who reportedly comprised 85 percent of its students. This school also welcomed students and faculty forced to flee Nazi-occupied Europe, and at least twenty-one faculty and eleven student refugees were offered sanctuary there during the Nazi period. • Intrauterine cocaine, lead, and nicotine exposure and fetal growth

Daniel R Neuspiel, Morri Markowitz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Intrauterine tobacco, lead, and cocaine exposure often co-occur and may affect fetal growth and development, yet studies of gestational cocaine effects have not adequately measured lead or tobacco. In this anonymous survey, blood lead and urine cotinine levels were determined and mothers were queried about tobacco use. Eighteen cocaine-exposed mother-infant dyads had higher lead and cotinine levels than 46 random nonexposed dyads, regardless of r…

    Daniel R Neuspiel, T M Zingman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 3•References: 9

OBJECTIVES. Maternal cocaine use is a leading grounds for newborn foster placement. This study was initiated to investigate the factors that predict custody status of infants born to substance-abusing women. METHODS. A retrospective cohort design was used to study the correlates of discharge custody decisions for 99 consecutive infants testing positive for cocaine in a public hospital. RESULTS. The population was 49% Black, 40% Hispanic, and 11% …

    Daniel R Neuspiel•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

The association of mental health symptoms with cocaine use was studied among post partum women. Gestational cocaine use was determined by confidential interview or urine assay. A structured Psychiatric Symptom Index was used to measure mental health symptoms. Among 155 women, 24 (15%) used cocaine. Cocaine-using women had less education, higher parity, less weight gain during pregnancy, and used more cigarettes, marijuana, and opiates in pregnanc…

  • Parental smoking and post-infancy wheezing in children: A prospective cohort study

Daniel R Neuspiel, David Rush et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1989•Cited by: 4•References: 24

The contribution of parental smoking to wheezing in children was studied in a subset of all British births between April 5 and 11, 1970 (N = 9,670). Children of smoking mothers had an 18.0 per cent cumulative incidence of post-infancy wheezing through 10 years of age, compared with 16.2 per cent among children of nonsmoking mothers (risk ratio 1.11, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.21). This difference was confined to wheezing attributed to wheezy bronchitis, of …
