  • A Comparative Study of Female Engineers’ Experiences in Ireland

Deirdre Brennan, Aoife Ahern et al.•ARTICLE•Engineering Studies•2026•References: 3

This article presents the first large scale quantitative study on the issue of female retention in the Irish context. In this examination of what drives women to persist or leave the industry, we identify factors such as demographics, employment conditions and workplace issues that play a role in determining the scale of Ireland's attrition problem for female engineers. The scale of experiences of sexism amongst respondents is presented as are so…

  • Queer/y/ing pathways through youth homelessness

    Open Access•Aideen Quilty, Michelle Norris•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 13

This article extends Clapham's (2002) concept of 'housing pathways' to explore the nature of specific youth homelessness associated with diverse LGBTQI+ identities. Drawing on in-depth interviews with homeless LGBTQI+ youth in Ireland we offer a queer consideration of the structural challenges and agentic potentialities of young people's housing pathways. Building on these young people's experiences of becoming, being and leaving homelessness our…

  • Unreal, unsheltered, unseen, unrecorded

    Open Access•Michelle Norris, Aideen Quilty•ARTICLE•Critical Social Policy•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 25

There is significant research evidence which demonstrates that LGBTQI+ young people experience higher rates of homelessness than their straight and cis peers. However, estimates of the scale of their over representation in homelessness vary significantly. This partially reflects difficulties in identifying and researching LGBTQI+ homeless youth due to their invisibility within homeless services. Drawing on in-depth interviews with homeless LGBTQI…

  • Improbable frequency? Advocating queer–feminist pedagogic alliances within Irish and European higher education contexts

    Open Access•Aideen Quilty•ARTICLE•European Journal of Women s Studies•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Heterosexist ideology underpins education policy and practice almost universally. It has the effect of rendering invisible and disrespecting practitioners and students of other sexual and non-gender conforming identities. Much explicitly queer work has challenged this normalising and frequently oppressive higher education terrain. To maximise this queer potential this article proposes re-positioning queer within and through a practice and pedagog…

  • Feminist education and feminist community psychology

    Open Access•Geraldine Moane, Aideen Quilty•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This article describes experiences in an Irish context of education programs delivered in 2 communities, 1 based on class (a working class urban community) and 1 based on sexual orientation (an urban lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community). It aims to illustrate how feminist education can play an important role in feminist community psychology. Principles and practices of feminist education, or feminist pedagogy, have a great deal in c…
