    E Portacolone, Nynikka R Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2020

Black/African American populations are underrepresented as participants in dementia research. A major barrier to participation of African American older adults in dementia research is a tendency to distrust research institutions owing to both historical and contemporary racism. Building on the Ford framework, the objective of our study was to examine factors that influence participation in dementia research among African American older adults and…

  • Building and Sustaining a Community Advisory Board of African American Older Adults as the Foundation for Volunteer Research Recruitment and Retention in Health Sciences

    Jamie Mitchell, Tam E Perry et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2020

Older African Americans' participation in health-related research is severely limited; they are not involved in sufficient numbers to ensure the applicability of advancements in medical and behavioral health. This research participation gap exacerbates older African Americans' vulnerability to poor health outcomes and disparities. The Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research employs a progressive community-based participatory mod…

    Peter A Lichtenberg•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2016

Research in the past decade has documented that financial exploitation of older adults has become a major problem, and psychology is only recently increasing its presence in efforts to reduce exploitation. During the same time period, psychology has been a leader in setting best practices for the assessment of diminished capacity in older adults culminating in the 2008 American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging and American Psychologica…

Analysis indicated partial support, although, other factors may moderate this relationship

  • The Relationship between Depression and Cognition in Older Adults

Peter A Lichtenberg, T Ross et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1995

The relationship between depression and cognition in older adults has become a topic of extensive research and clinical interest. Results of previous research are limited, however, by sampling and methodological problems. Small sample sizes and the treatment of depression as a dichotomous variable may be major factors that limit data interpretation in previous studies. The present sample of 220 geriatric medical patients was split into a validati…

This lack of experience coupled with the cultural recognition of youth as a symbol of vitality makes gr…
