  • When do teachers gesture: Conditions affecting gesture production in video-mediated lexical explanations

    Open Access•Benjamin Holt•ARTICLE•AILA Review•2026

Video-mediated interaction is becoming increasingly common in foreign language education ( O’Dowd, 2023 ), offering learners opportunities to develop oral skills through interaction with L1 speakers. Lexical explanation sequences are of particular interest in cognitive-interactionist research ( Loewen & Sato, 2018 ) because they engage learners in focusing on both form and meaning ( Long & Robinson, 1998 ). Gestures play a key role in language le…

  • An ‘Elephant Trying to Chase a Rat’: Indian Coin in the Mizo Hills, 1967–1970

    Open Access•Benjamin Holt•ARTICLE•War in History•2024

Indian COIN operations during the Mizo civil war (1966–1986) are widely believed to have been effective, apparently paving the way for lasting peace. This article refutes this traditional stance. Indian COIN had serious limitations, struggling in an operational sense to conclusively defeat the MNF partly because of its broader inability to secure widespread local support. The peace that has defined the Mizo Hills since 1986 was forged despite Ind…

  • A multimodal corpus to study videoconference interactions for techno-pedagogical competence in second language acquisition and teacher education

Marco Cappellini, Benjamin Holt et al.•ARTICLE•Corpus•2023

This article aims to describe the construction and annotation of a multimodal and multilingual (French, English, and Mandarin Chinese) corpus for the study of second language acquisition and professional development in language teaching. The corpus was built within a research project whose main objective is to determine which techno-semio-pedagogical competencies are developed informally and which ones require formal training. In this paper, we e…

  • Building the state and conceiving the nation: The origins of separatist insurgency in the Mizo Hills, 1945-61

    Open Access•Benjamin Holt•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2022•References: 21

In 1966 the Mizo National Front (MNF) instigated a separatist conflict against the Indian state. This article argues that an environment conducive for separatist insurgency was created by the early 1960s in the Mizo Hills, a direct result of problematic state- and nation- building practices. First, there was an inability to initiate a successful state-building drive to overcome deep-seated challenges bestowed by colonial rule. Second, the frictio…

Benjamin Holt, Benjamin Holt Benjamin Holt•ARTICLE•Indiana Journal of Global Legal…•2016

The invention of chemically embossed cushioned vinyl flooring revolutionized the flooring industry in the mid-1900s, and the patents on this technology became the basis for large-scale litigation between two of the industry’s leaders. This is the story of Mannington Mills, Inc. v. Congoleum Corp.—a case that implicated foreign patent rights and the territorial nature of patent law, the extraterritorial scope of U.S. antitrust law (at a time when …
