Russian women’s protests against the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine
China’s Energy Security in the Twenty-First Century
Gender-Blind and Anti-Feminist
Against the backdrop of the increasing global schisms around gender equality in recent years, the discussion of Russia’s domestic anti-gender politics is coming to the fore. To date, however, little work has bridged the domestic–international divide in this discussion by thoroughly examining the interplay between Russian foreign policy, national branding and the domestic conservative turn. This gap inspires the twofold question underscoring this …
China’s Experiments with Social Media
As the Chinese state ramps up its efforts in international narrative competitions, Chinese media master new genres and test different visual languages on global social media platforms. The diverse content they produce provides a new source of information about China’s self-representations intended for foreigners and thus provides a condensed answer to one of the key questions of China’s foreign policy: Who is China? It also responds to the questi…
Russia's Actually (Non-)Existent Neoliberalism
The article explores Russia's ‘turn to the East’ and examines different and often conflicting visions of development that emerged in the process of reconstructing the Russian Far Eastern development strategy at regional and federal levels. It draws on a ‘thick’ case study of the special investment regime, Free Port Vladivostok, which exemplifies simultaneously a new approach to regional development and the contradictions spawned by it. Analysis o…
Gendered securitisation
This article presents a study of the discursive politics of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States and Russia from its early onset to 30 April 2020. We examine how official securitisation discourses in the two countries draw on gendered constructions of national identity and discuss what linkages and potential implications they have for the state, its policy, and its society. Our analysis shows that both the US President Donald Trump and Russ…

China’s belt and road initiative in Russian media
Through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) it is obvious that China is crafting a new space for itself in the international system and becoming more assertive and confident in its international dealings, including in Eurasia, typically considered by Russia as its backyard. This raises the question of how the BRI is presented and perceived in Russia. The article explores this question by examining the coverage of the BRI in Russia’s major newspape…
Discursive Politics of Energy in EU–Russia Relations
Vladimir Putin’s regime has struggled to restore Russia’s great power status. The discourses that have emerged around Russian energy wealth play a particularly significant role in this struggle and shape Russia’s identity in international relations. These multiple and contradictory understandings of energy resources are encapsulated in the two dominant discourses: the energy superpower and the raw-material appendage discourses. This paper examine…
