How the Covid-19 lockdowns influenced journalists to change the way they react to online and digitally enhanced dangerous and fake content
The COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns prompted the elevation of technology facilitated online and digital resources as vital mainstays for journalists to conduct their professional duties. The pivot towards digital and online resources, already in motion within the journalism industry, was accelerated by the changes to work and life patterns in the wake of the pandemic. The same reliance correspondingly increased the exposure journalists experience to …
Fostering methodological literacy and research identity in creative-practice HDR education
This paper evaluates a pilot Methodology Seminar Series, designed to support Contemporary Art Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates in developing and articulating practice-led research methodologies. Conducted over six sessions from June to October 2025, the series provided a structured, dialogic environment for exploring practice-led research frameworks through key readings, reflective discussion, and practitioner insights. Using a mixed-metho…
They need to know that it’s theirs
Of the variety of ways governments, organisations and artists are embedding art and culture within rural tourism strategy, public art trails have emerged as a popular form and approach. However, rural and remote local governments face challenges in realising possible benefits of arts tourism for their communities. This article takes remote northern Australia art tourism initiative, the Savannah Way Art Trail, as a case study to consider principle…
The Role of Universities in Strengthening Regional Arts Sectors
Noting the unique challenges facing arts and culture in rural and regional Australia, this article takes the Central Queensland Regional Arts Services Network (CQRASN) as a case study to examine the role of universities in supporting the regional arts sector. Previous research acknowledges the contributions of universities to the arts sector through evaluation, innovation and knowledge transfer. This case study enables exploration of a different …
‘Punching above our weight’
In Australia, the most visible film festivals are clustered around urban centres, yet there is a flourishing network of film festivals outside of major cities. In the state of Queensland, the festivals in regional and rural areas provide crucial visibility for the industry, local community and emerging filmmakers. Following the growth in film festival scholarship, and research on global digital distribution, the impetus for this research was to e…
Dirty, filthy cities
Australia is a country of extreme landscapes: untamed natural coastlines through to the mysterious and dangerous interior. Australian cinema has regularly showcased the country’s landscape, often creating a sense of character in the land itself. Although the majority of Australians live in the major metropolitan hubs of the country, cities in cinema lose distinctiveness on-screen to augment opportunities for international success. However, two ci…
Regional screen cultures
In the midst of drought in Central Queensland, the small town of Winton triples its population for the Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival. Even when facing challenges, the local community values the way the festival brings the community together, injects tourist dollars into the local economy and provides visibility to the local screen industry. However, staging a film festival in a regional location can be challenging. There are often less lo…
Mapping the emotional journey of the doctoral ‘hero’
This article discusses how doctoral candidates identify and navigate personal learning challenges on their journey to becoming researchers. Our study asked creative arts and humanities candidates to think beyond the research project itself and reflect on emotional hurdles they were facing or had overcome. The findings point to a great deal of ‘invisible’ work that underpins doctoral study, and show that such hidden work can have a major influence…
Sea-level playing fields
Football, or soccer, is a simple game. It requires very little in the way of practical resources. Markers for a goal, a ball-shaped object. This simplicity enables the sport to be undertaken almost anywhere. Yet the beach is one place the game requires a substantial rethink in approach and participation. The best players do not necessarily make the best beach soccer players. For many Australians, the coastal edge of their continent is more than a…
Badland beach
The image of the Australian beach as a place of beautiful waves and sand is popular on postcards and seen frequently in tourism campaigns around the world. And yet, the beach is a surprisingly complex spatial location. Despite its beauty, the beach can have a disturbing underbelly of crime and danger. The ongoing tension between its role as a cultural icon of myth as well as an ordinary, lived location makes it a layered landscape. This article u…
Queensland's film culture
Queensland's film sector is currently in the midst of significant change. Organisations at the centre of the state's industry, such as Screen Queensland, have undergone substantial and ongoing changes in the last five years. Other organisations funded by Screen Queensland, such as QPIX, Queensland's only film development centre, have recently closed. The Brisbane International Film Festival has been restructured to become the Brisbane Asia Pacifi…
