Open Access•Zhidan Zhou, Mingsheng Li et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026•References: 29

The globalization of education has underscored the critical role of cultural intelligence (CQ) in teaching and learning, especially for native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) in China. This study explores the impact of CQ on the teaching effectiveness of NESTs and the learning outcomes of Chinese university students. Drawing on semi-structured interviews, this research delves into the challenges and opportunities presented in cross-cultural tea…

  • Key antecedents of maximal levels of aspiration and minimal boundary goals

    Open Access•Flaviu A Hodis, Georgeta M Hodis•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Education Review•2025

Research findings indicate that two types of goals, which focus on the lowest (highest) levels of achievement possible in a learning setting, are strong predictors of how well students attain in school. Unfortunately, little is known about how these two goals, termed minimal boundary goals (MBG) and maximal levels of aspiration (MLA) relate to psychological constructs that are theorized to be antecedents of goals. To fill this knowledge gap, this…

Forty-five Chinese students from 12 universities in southwestern China participated in the semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate pedagogical practices were perceived positively for practical language application but criticized for culturally incompatible pedagogical practices. Instruct…

  • Measuring Promotion and Prevention Orientations of Secondary School Students

Flaviu A Hodis, John Hattie et al.•ARTICLE•Measurement and Evaluation in…•2016•References: 4

The General Regulatory Focus Measure has been used extensively in psychological research to gauge promotion and prevention orientations. Findings of this research show that for New Zealand secondary school students, the General Regulatory Focus Measure does not measure promotion and prevention as theoretically independent constructs

  • Expectancy, Value, Promotion, and Prevention

    Flaviu A Hodis, Georgeta M Hodis•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2015•References: 16

In this study, we report on findings regarding the role that key communication constructs have in mediating the relationships among domain-specific expectancy and value beliefs and general motivation orientations. The results show that when student motivation has a promotion focus, feeling satisfied in communicating with the teacher in a course is a catalyst for heightened levels of expectancy of success and utility value beliefs regarding the co…

  • Maximal levels of aspiration, minimal boundary goals, and their relationships with academic achievement

    Open Access•Flaviu A Hodis, Maxene Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 37

Maximising educational attainment is important for both individuals and societies. However, understanding of why some students achieve better than others is far from complete. Motivation and achievement data from a sample of 782 secondary‐school students in New Zealand reveal that two specific types of outcome goals, namely maximal levels of aspiration and minimal boundary goals , predict subsequent student achievement independently of mastery, p…

  • Latent Growth Modeling for Communication Research

    Flaviu A Hodis, Georgeta M Hodis•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Latent growth modeling (LGM) is a powerful, flexible, and versatile methodology for studying time-related change. Employing LGM in the communication field can make important contributions to advancing communication research, theory, and pedagogy. This chapter presents the specific advantages of conceptualizing and analyzing change in a LGM framework and offers a methodologically sound and useful presentation of the procedure from a structural equ…
