Tailored interventions recognizing community strengths and addressing specific health issues are crucial for improving outcomes in marginalized communities, necessitating a health-in-all policies approach considering social, cultural, and structural determinants of health
Lessons learned from two community health assessment surveys in the “most diverse square mile in America
Purpose The purpose of this study is to briefly describe the methods for two community health assessments (CHAs) conducted in one of the largest refugee resettlement sites in the USA and share lessons learned for the benefit of academic researchers and community-based organization staff interested in conducting similar CHAs. The rapid shift to virtual mental health care
BACKGROUND: Given the low usage of virtual health care prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unclear whether those living in rural locations would benefit from increased availability of virtual mental health care. The rapid transition to virtual services during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed for a unique opportunity to examine how the transition to virtual mental health care impacted psychotherapy disruption (i.e., 45+ days between appointments) …
Depression Treatment Initiation Among Patients With Versus Without Chronic Pain
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which the presence of chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) impacts the likelihood that patients with diagnoses of depression will initiate depression treatment compared with those without CNCP. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia members older than 18 years who received a diagnosis of depression. Demographics and medical history were extracte…
Association Between Adverse Social Determinants of Health and Suicide Death

Economic Evaluation
BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is prevalent and costly; cost-effective nonpharmacological approaches that reduce pain and improve patient functioning are needed. OBJECTIVE: Report the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER), compared with usual care, of cognitive behavioral therapy aimed at improving functioning and pain among patients with chronic pain on long-term opioid treatment. DESIGN: Economic evaluation conducted alongside a pragmatic clust…
Suicide Deaths Before and During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic
INTRODUCTION: With stressors that are often associated with suicide increasing during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there has been concern that suicide mortality rates may also be increasing. Our objective was to determine whether suicide mortality rates increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an interrupted time-series study using data from January 2019 through December 2020 from 2 large integrated healt…
Near Real-time Surveillance for Consequences of Health Policies Using Sequential Analysis
BACKGROUND: New health policies may have intended and unintended consequences. Active surveillance of population-level data may provide initial signals of policy effects for further rigorous evaluation soon after policy implementation. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the utility of sequential analysis for prospectively assessing signals of health policy impacts. As a policy example, we studied the consequences of the widely publicized Food and Dr…
Perception of community tolerance and prevalence of depression among transgender persons
Depression was common in this sample of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals and was strongly and consistently associated with participants' perceptions of community tolerance, even after adjusting for possible confounding. The association between desire to receive hormonal therapy and depression is a finding that warrants further exploration. Future research should also assess depression and changes in perception of community tolera…
Racial/Ethnic Differences in Health Care Visits Made Before Suicide Attempt Across the United States
BACKGROUND: Suicide is a public health concern, but little is known about the patterns of health care visits made before a suicide attempt, and whether those patterns differ by race/ethnicity. OBJECTIVES: To examine racial/ethnic variation in the types of health care visits made before a suicide attempt, when those visits occur, and whether mental health or substance use diagnoses were documented. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective, longitudinal stud…
Complementary and alternative medicine use decreases adherence to Haart in HIV-positive women
The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat chronic illnesses, especially HIV, is becoming increasingly widespread. Given this popularity, it is critical to understand how HIV-positive individuals use CAM and, more specifically, whether CAM use impacts their adherence to prescribed antiretroviral regimens (HAART). The present study examined the relationship between CAM use and HAART adherence among HIV+ women. Data were analy…
