Distributive Conflict, Monetary Theory of Distribution and the Banking Sector
This paper analyses the implications of distributive conflict for the monetary theory of distribution. After a brief overview of the literature on the subject, an attempt is made to model the banking sector within the framework of Pivetti’s approach. Then, the paper discusses the ability of this approach to explain the coexistence of near-zero (if not negative) interest rates and low real wages. The difficulty in explaining this economic phenomen…
Interest Rate and Wages
The large majority of theoretical contributions on the nature of the relationship between the rate of profit and the rate of interest - the Classics and Marx, but also more recent contributions inspired by them - assume that the interest rate is a part of the profit rate, and thus that credit is only targeted at firms. Over time, however, credit towards consumption and for the purchase of housing by workers has taken on greater and greater econom…
A Note on Capital in a Functional Analysis of the Traditional Banking Industry
A functional analysis of the traditional banking industry is developed in this paper. Following a reflection on the possibility of conceiving a 'banking production cycle', its fundamental output is identified in credit and the input in deposit. The study then continues with an analysis of capital: the anticipated capital required for banking is solely equity capital and is mainly dependent on economic-institutional aspects. This paper then studie…
A Functional Analysis of the Role of Deposits in the Traditional Banking Industry
This paper proposes a functional analysis of the input of the traditional banking sector in an endogenous money framework. Although banks create bank money, central bank money (or reserves) cannot be produced by banks, which require it as an input. Deposits are the cheapest source of central bank money already in the system, so it can be argued that deposits serve as inputs for the banking industry. Nevertheless, for individual banks it is necess…
A History of the Relationship Between Interest Rate and Profit Rate in Heterodox Approaches
This article seeks to understand, compare, discuss and systematize the theories on the causal relationship between the rate of interest and the rate of profit, as proposed by various authors, while highlighting their similarities and differences. One group of authors asserts that the rate of interest determines the rate of profit, and thus the distribution of income, while a second argues that once the distribution is determined, it is the rate o…
