Parental employment shocks and children’s labor market outcomes
Parental employment shocks have been widely studied globally but remain underexplored in Vietnam. This study provides the first evidence on how employment shocks experienced by household heads influence children’s labor market outcomes in the country. We distinguish between two types of shocks, unemployment and inactivity, and examine their effects across age groups (adolescents versus adult children), family structures (dual-parent versus single…
Early marriage and employment in Vietnam
Early marriage, also known as child marriage, remains a significant issue in developing countries, including Vietnam. In 2014, the Vietnamese National Assembly revised the Law on Marriage and Family, including a provision to increase the minimum age of marriage for both genders to reduce this practice. This study presents the first evidence of the impact of this legal reform on the prevalence of early marriage and employment in Vietnam. A fuzzy r…
Labour market effects of social insurance reform in Vietnam
This research provides the first evidence on how labour supply and earnings may adjust to the expansion of insurance benefits under the 2014 Social Insurance Law reform. The data for this study come from the Vietnam Labour Force Surveys. Both difference-in-differences and fixed-effect models are used. The estimated results reveal negative reform effects on the work duration and earnings of both sexes and for both rural and urban areas. They also …

Although there has been substantial literature on the economic impact of labour legislation in the world, the number of studies related to Vietnam is, surprisingly, very small. Our article provides the first evidence on the link between labour law and various labour market outcomes using the Vietnamese context. We examine how labour supply, earnings and social protection outcomes adjusted to labour contract reform under the 2012 Labour Code. The …
Direct and spillover effects of social insurance reform
The introduction of the 2014 Social Insurance Law is a key reform of social protection in Vietnam. This article may be the first work quantifying the effects of the law’s introduction on family welfare. The propensity score matching combined with the difference-in-differences techniques is used to reduce bias. The study indicates that the generosity of the benefits provided by the law negatively affected the work duration and earnings among coupl…
Social insurance reform and absenteeism in Vietnam
There has been very little research into sickness absence in Vietnam. This article reveals how the labor market might adjust to more generous illness benefits offered by the Vietnam Social Insurance Law. In the study, we combined the difference‐in‐differences and matching techniques and used data from four waves of the Vietnam Labor Force Survey. The results indicate that the generosity of the benefits positively links to both the incidence and t…
