Being borderless
This qualitative study explores how agential realism can reframe understandings of early literacy and agency in Vietnam’s digital childhoods. It examines the entangled intra-actions of a 5-year-old Vietnamese child, Dat, with digital media, materials, spaces, and institutional discourses across home and early childhood education (ECE) settings. Data were gathered through observations, fieldnotes, video recordings, and interviews with teachers and…
Video‐Making in English Language Learning
From a Bakhtinian theoretical lens, children's ‘self‐authoring’ is an ongoing process in which they articulate external resources and integrate them into their ideas to develop new knowledge of themselves, people, places and things. This paper features the case of Nhi, a Vietnamese five‐year‐old girl, who authored the self in her English video‐making at home. Nhi's English videos were gathered in naturalistic observation and were analysed in a ch…
Nature as Thought — Symbolic Landscapes and Philosophical Echoes in Eastern and Western Literature
This study investigates how natural imagery functions as a symbolic structure of thought in modern Eastern and Western poetry. Rather than treating nature as a mere backdrop, it repositions elements such as wind, cloud, forest, sea, moon, and autumn as metaphysical symbols that encode cognitive, emotional, and philosophical meaning. Employing an interdisciplinary framework that integrates semiotics (Peirce, Kristeva), phenomenological aesthetics …
Unfinalizability
Drawing on a Bakhtinian idea of unfinalizability and a semiotics lens of multimodality, the authors conceptualize children's everyday narratives as chains of living stories that emerge at home and in early childhood education settings. In this study, the authors interpret the living stories and emergent identities of Dylan, a five-year-old Vietnamese boy, in Aotearoa New Zealand. Two narrative chains of Dylan's living stories were selected to rep…
Because of thương
This paper explores the self-authoring of two early childhood educators in Vietnam’s disadvantaged areas, Ha and Dong, to understand their marginalization and resilience in their daily practices. Guided by a Bakhtinian view, teachers’ self-authoring is conceptualized as an ongoing process in which the teachers articulate authoritarian discourses, and integrate them with their ideas to develop their internally persuasive discourses—their own knowl…

In the light of interbeing
This storied paper reflects my awakening to the notion of interbeing, a core concept of Engaged Buddhism posed by the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh. My awareness was heightened in writing about a young Vietnamese child, Dylan, with whom I engaged in an early childhood study in Aotearoa New Zealand. Underpinned by Chen’s Asia as Method, interbeing is considered a research orientation for decolonization, an alternative way of knowing and …
We are Vietnamese. A Reflection on Being Vietnamese-Australian
We are Vietnamese - A reflection on being Vietnamese-Australian is a creative non fiction piece concerning being a Vietnamese-Australian author in the present day. It explores Hoa’s meeting with Pham Thi Hoai, a Vietnamese author in exile in Berlin, and her encounters with Thich Nhat Hanh the Vietnamese Zen Master. It also interrogates the cultural perceptions of Vietnam in Australia and Hoa’s own subject position as a published Asian Australian …
Predictors of adherence to micronutrient supplementation before and during pregnancy in Vietnam
NCT01665378 . Registered on August 12, 2012
Vietnam is a country, not a war-trauma and nostalgia in the anthology The Perfume River
Vietnam is a country not a war. But the Vietnam/American war is hard to forget in the Western context; even almost 40 years on, many Western introductions to Vietnam is through American war veteran movies and musicals like Miss Saigon. The scholarship on Vietnamese diasporic literature is similarly limited with only one major monograph. This is what I choose to tell by Isabelle Pelaud published in 2010 about Vietnamese diasporic writing in Englis…
