Between Gods and Empires
The hierothesion of Antiochus I on Mount Nemrud is conventionally interpreted through the lens of political theology – as a frontier ruler's calculated synthesis of Greek and Iranian religious traditions designed to legitimise dynastic power between Rome and Parthia. The dominant scholarly tradition, spanning from Theresa Goell and Friedrich Karl Dörner to Margherita Facella, reads Nemrud primarily as an instrument of political pragmatism. This a…
Influence of High-performance Sports on the Formation of Armenian Citizens’ National Identity in the Second Half of the 20th Century
The authors examine a little-studied scientific problem: the connection between the collective image of the future and sporting identity, which is based on the achievements of talented Armenian athletes such as Tigran Petrosyan (chess), Yuri Vardanyan (weightlifting), and Eduard Azaryan (gymnastics). The article analyzes the fictional city of Burg as a multi-layered palimpsest of cultural and historical layers that act as tools for criticizing modern urbanism. Steampunk is understood here not as nostalgic decoration but as a retrofuturist optic that fuses past and future to expose the hidden mechanisms of…
Zealotry and Primordialism as Key Features of Armenian Historiography of the Late Soviet and Post-Soviet Periods
The article analyzes the key features of the Armenian historiography of the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods. With rare exceptions, it was formed within the framework of predominantly Armenian approaches, which are characterized by “zealotry” in the Toynbean sense and primordialism in its various manifestations. Armenian studies, as one of the very specific areas of Orientalism, originated in Western Europe, from where it then spread to Russia…
An ode to the city. Review of
A Note on the Ancient World-Systems
The article deals with the relationship of such concepts as the world-system and civilisation, both living independently and co-existing in time and space. World-systems and civilisations may be forced to unite into hyper-systems, or world-empires of different kind—self-sufficient, militarist-parasitic, and mixed type. Militarist empires-parasites can be settled and nomadic. Nomadic or bivouac empires are empires-armies, which exist only in movem…
