Cultural extractivism and its undoing: Towards socioecological transformations through cultural production
Art, Extractivism, and the Ontological Shift: Toward a (Post)Extractivist Aesthetics
This article aims to contribute to a (post)extractivist aesthetics at a time of ontological shifts, meaning an aesthetics that focuses on the role of art in struggles for (post)extractivist worlds. First, it argues for a contextualized approach to the use of the extractivism framework and proposes that this framework is particularly productive for approaching the socio-environmental crisis due to the way it allows us to engage with the ontologica…
Creating Worlds Otherwise: Art, Collective Action, and (Post)Extractivism
A decolonial, ecofeminist ethic of care
The challenges we currently face are multiple, and they are interconnected. What began as a global health crisis provoked by COVID‐19 quickly unfolded into an economic one, and while the effects of extractivism and climate change are increasingly felt, xenophobia, racism, homophobia and misogyny are encouraged by politicians across the world. As anthropologists, we are well positioned to evaluate both structural patterns of inequality and oppress…
A rapist in your path’: Transnational feminist protest and why (and how) performance matters

Living Precarious Lives? Time and Temporality in Visual Arts Careers
Although precarity has always been a characteristic feature of artistic labour, many critics now claim it is becoming more widespread and engrained. However, while the idea of precarity offers a good descriptor of the conditions of artistic labour, it also has its limits. Firstly, it tends to gloss over social differences in the distribution of precariousness. And secondly, precarity tends to imply a universal condition of 'temporal poverty' wher…

By considering theories of prefiguration in activism and social movements, and the framework of participation in live art and performance, this article asks: Can activist performance be prefigurative and interventionist at the same time? And, if activist perfo…
