Sex and Gender Identity: Data Collection and Language Considerations for Human Research Ethics Committees and Researchers
Including women in research and collecting and disaggregating data on sex is an ethical imperative. However, increasingly gender identity is being prioritised over sex in data collection and language which has ethical implications. In this paper, the authors share their experiences as study participants; a health consumer advocate, patient research advisor, and lay researcher; and academic researchers of engaging with researchers, Human Research …
Graduate training in school psychology: Applied behavior analysis and autism spectrum disorder
This study investigated school psychologist's professional self‐efficacy in working with students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), applied behavioral analysis (ABA), and other general domains. This study recruited 215 specialist and doctoral level school psychologists or school psychology interns. The Applied Behavior Analysis Efficacy Scale (ABAES) was modeled after the Huber Inventory of Trainee Self‐Efficacy (HITS). Contributions of train…

Beneath Education Production Functions: The Case of Primary Education in Jamaica
Qualitative follow-up was used to add depth to an econometrically based investigation of home and school predictors of achievement in Jamaica (Glewwe, Grosh, Jacoby, & Lockheed, 1995). In the original investigation, theory and research were used to identify potential predictors. Data on these factors, as well as student achievement, were collected on a large, national sample that linked families with the schools their children attended. Although …
Racial identity in biracial children: A qualitative investigation.
Cross-Sex Collaborative Learning in Elementary Classrooms
Structured naturalistic observations, representing about 1,400 hours of classroom behavior, and student surveys were analyzed to determine: (a) the extent to which small group instruction was used in elementary school classrooms, (b) the academic conditions under which small group instruction was used, and (c) the effects of small group instruction on student attitudes and perceptions, particularly those related to gender stereotypes. In 29 fourt…
Classroom Interaction and Opportunities for Cross-Sex Peer Learning in Science
The relationship between opportunities for cross-sex peer learning and student attitudes toward cross-sex peer learning in science was addressed in an analysis of data from 29 fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms. It was found that teachers rarely organize instruction to encourage peer learning and that students are generally unwilling to work with a cross-sex classmate on science projects. Students in classrooms exhibiting relatively higher levels…
