A Late Bronze Age hoard from Elgiszewo reflects the complex interplay between bronzesmithing, metal hoarding and local identity
In 2014, a multi-type hoard of bronze metalwork was unearthed as a result of illegal metal detection on the peaty lakeshore in the village of Elgiszewo, north-central Poland. This article reports test studies on the potential application of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (hereafter FTIR) for distinguishing artefacts made from the bone and antler of European cervids ( Cervidae ). Picks are extremely rare artefacts associated with flint inventories of the Linear Band Pottery culture (hereinafter: LBK). Previously, only three such artefacts attributed to this culture have been found in the drainage basins of the Vistula and Oder Rivers. The article describes the results of the interdisciplinary studies of a unique bone slotted point from Tłokowo, north-eastern Poland. The artefact was discovered in 1989, and indirect dating suggested an Early Mesolithic date. In this article we present the results of direct radiocarbon dating of the point, which shows that it is almost 2000 years younger than previously suggested.
