  • Understanding the Form and Timing of Damage to Archaeological Sites During the Syrian Conflict by Combining Evidence From Remote Sensing With Ground Observation

    Open Access•Adnan Almohamad, Kristen Hopper et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Satellite remote sensing is used widely to monitor damage to archaeological sites in conflict areas, including in Syria. On‐the‐ground assessments have been fewer in number, and the degree to which remote sensing assessments reflect what is happening on the ground has not been extensively tested. Using data from 19 archaeological sites in northwest Syria, we present a case study comparing the strengths of satellite remote sensing and ground obser…

  • Filling the Gaps—Computational Approaches to Incomplete Archaeological Networks

Open Access•Deborah Priß, John Wainwright et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Networks are increasingly used to describe and analyse complex archaeological data in terms of nodes (archaeological sites or places) and edges (representing relationships or connections between each pair of nodes). Network analysis can then be applied to express local and global properties of the system, including structure ( e.g. modularity) or connectivity. However, the usually high amount of missing data in archaeology and the uncertainty the…

  • New Book Chronicle

    Open Access•Dan Lawrence, Daniel A Lawrence et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2018•References: 129

And so to my next NBC, the difficult second album, the sophomore slump. As an antidote to any jitters on my part, in this issue we tackle a range of books investigating creativity and innovation in the past. Innovation is enjoying something of a ‘moment’ in archaeological thought at present, with several large, multi-disciplinary projects underway in Europe and sessions devoted to the topic at major US and European conferences over the last few y…

  • The Northern and Western Borderlands of the Sasanian Empire

    Open Access•Dan Lawrence, Daniel A Lawrence et al.•CHAPTER•Sasanian Persia•2017

This chapter investigates the archaeological landscapes of the frontiers of the Sasanian Empire. Drawing on evidence from current and archived archaeological surveys, in combination with high-resolution remote sensing datasets such as CORONA spy photography, we compare the organisation of settlements and defensive structures of the Sasanian frontier zones in response to a variety of external pressures. These varied from the Roman Empire in the we…
