Evidence of Emerald Long-Distance Exchange in the Isthmo-Colombian Area
In this study, we analyzed a set of translucent green stones found at the Panamanian archaeological sites of El Caño and Sitio Conte. To characterize the samples, we used optical microscopy, portable X-ray fluorescence, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, FTIR, and photoluminescence. These analyses identify the stones as emeralds and reveal geochemical signatures consistent with a Colombian origin. We then conducted a comparative stylistic technological ass…
When Women Fail Women: A Hybridized Postcolonial Reading of Lydia’s Collaboration in Acts 16:11–18
This article presents a hybridized postcolonial analysis of Acts 16:6–18, focusing on Lydia’s offer to support and host Paul and his companions while juxtaposing this with her failure to provide any aid to the slave girl in Philippi, whose divining spirit is exorcised by Paul. This analysis is situated within the author’s positionality as a middle-class white woman. The study begins by situating the Philippian narrative within Musa Dube’s framewo…
Pyrite tesserae mosaics from El Caño (750–1100 CE), Panamá: Evidence of interactions between the Coclé and Maya regions
Wood in Pre-Columbian Funerary Rituals: A Case Study from El Caño (Panama, AD 880–1020)
This research presents for the first time a comprehensive study of charcoal directly related to the multiple burials interred in Tomb 2 of El Caño (Coclé province, Panama). This funerary context, which dates to between AD 880 to AD 1020, contained three different burial levels accompanied by substantial ceramic offerings and rich mortuary assemblages. The challenge of taxonomically identifying charcoal from tropical areas was addressed by combini…
Approach to the Study of the Phenomenon of Multiple Burials at El Caño, Panama
In this article we present a study that seeks to explain the nature of, and the mortuary practices behind, the burials containing multiple individuals at the site of El Caño, Panama (part of the "Gran Coclé" archaeological tradition, ca. AD 700-1000). We set out to test our first impression of these burials as products of sumptuous funerals held upon the death of the rulers that included, among other practices, human sacrifice. With this in mind,…
Golden artefacts, resin figurines, body adhesives and tomb sediments from the pre-Columbian burial site El Caño (Gran Coclé, Panamá): Tracing organic contents using molecular archaeometry
La armadura dorada de un cacique coclé: Los pectorales de oro del ajuar del individuo principal de la Tumba 2 de la necrópolis de El Caño (900-1020 d. C.)
The recent discovery and excavation (2009) of a funerary complex at the site of El Caño in the Gran-Cocle region of Panama has shed new light on isthmian archaeology. In this article we present a descriptive analysis and iconographic interpretation of the four gold pectorals present in the tomb of one of the chiefs who, judging by their ritual burial and richness of their burial goods is the highest status individual excavated at the site. The em…
