Neolithic Plants From Eastern Arabia
Poor preservation of organic material at Bahra‐1 required expanding archaeobotanical analysis beyond sediments to plant impressions in pottery. The examined sediments yielded only a few biomineralized Boraginaceae seeds, whereas examination of locally made Coarse Red Ware (CRW) and imported Ubaid pottery significantly broadened the Neolithic plant dataset. Almost all CRW contained temper composed of wild plants, while plant inclusions in Ubaid po…
Tracing pottery production centres and sources over millennia in north-western Oman
Patterns of pre‐Islamic settlement in the Qumayrah microregion, northern Oman
The Qumayrah microregion lies in the mountains of northern Oman, roughly halfway between two large oasis settlements—Bat and Hili. It is situated at the crossing of routes leading from the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman into the interior. Results of a previous archaeological excavation and survey confirmed the presence of sites from prehistoric times to the Islamic period in the area. In light of both the continuity of settlement and the locat…
Chalcolithic settlement of Bahra 1 and its possible functions
Excavations of the Kuwaiti–Polish Archaeological Mission at the site of Bahra 1 in Kuwait uncovered the remains of a large settlement from the sixth millennium BC, associated with the Mesopotamian Ubaid culture. This connection is made clear by the presence of Ubaid Ware from the Ubaid 2/3 phase that appears alongside Red Coarse Ware typical for the Arabian Neolithic. Architecture of the settlement resembled the Ubaid one with orthogonal, multi‐c…
