  • The archaeometry of ochre sensu lato: A review

    Open Access•Rachel S Popelka-Filcoff, Andrew M Zipkin•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2022

This manuscript seeks to facilitate meta-analysis of cross-disciplinary ochre studies by advocating for a common vocabulary and clarifying the definition of “ochre” as used by archaeological scientists across cultural and geographic specialties. This work reviews the current state of ochre archaeometry, spanning the beginning of its major period of growth in the late 20th century through the present. Here, the focus is on the main areas of ochre …

  • Elemental fingerprinting of Kenya Rift Valley ochre deposits for provenance studies of rock art and archaeological pigments

    Open Access•Andrew M Zipkin, Stanley H Ambrose et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Ochre fingerprints: Distinguishing among M alawian mineral pigment sources with H omogenized O chre C hip LA–ICPMS

    Open Access•Andrew M Zipkin, John M Hanchar et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 39

In this study, we compared the effectiveness of instrumental neutron activation analysis ( INAA ) of bulk ochre to laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry of homogenized ochre chips ( HOC LA–ICPMS ) at distinguishing among three ochre sources in northern M alawi. Both techniques upheld the P rovenance P ostulate; however, HOC LA–ICPMS required less sample material than INAA and facilitated fast, inexpensive replicate observati…
