Hieroglyphic Inscriptions on Hittite Pottery from Late Bronze Kinet Höyük (Hatay, Turkey)
Like many Late Bronze sites in Cilicia, the ancient seaport at Kinet Höyük adopted a material culture reflecting Hittite standards from central Anatolia. The process, dynamics, and intentions engineering this assimilation have long been explored from many perspectives, including the ceramic repertoire. This paper contributes to the discussion by introducing a group of Kinet LB vessels with Anatolian Hieroglyphic potmarks and seal impressions that…

Aegean and Aegeanising Geometric pottery at Kinet Höyük
This paper examines the Aegean and Aegeanising ceramic wares of Geometric type that were recovered in excavations at the Cilician seaport of Kinet Höyük. Its Geometric pottery assemblage, published here for the first time, is among the largest found so far in the eastern Mediterranean and provides the starting point for a new reconstruction of Greek pottery consumption patterns in the eastern Mediterranean. With this aim, we first present the for…
The Hittite Seaport Izziya at Late Bronze Age Kinet Höyük (Cilicia)
Recent excavations at Kinet Höyük, an ancient Cilician seaport in the northeastern Mediterranean, document the cultural transformations that were exerted by the Late Bronze Age Hittite state to secure its peripheral territories. During the Middle Bronze Age, Kinet Höyük had maintained its regional identity while prospering from the maritime commercial network that flourished along the Levantine coast. This regional profile changed when Kinet Höyü…

Nomadic Pastoralists and the Chalcolithic Hoard from Nahal Mishmar
The Nahal Mishmar hoard of copper and arsenical bronze artifacts, dated to the Palestinian Chalcolithic, mid-fourth millennium B.C., has been discussed in previous studies as a collection of objects fortuitously placed in a cave in the Judean Desert. This paper argues that the hoard should be closely associated with the transhumant pastoralists who occupied the cave, and reflects the skill of itinerants specializing in a variety of livelihoods, i…

Dialogues between Ancient near Eastern Texts and the Archaeological Record
Scholarship on the historical ancient Near East pursues two often independent approaches, epigraphic and archaeological. While the two approaches may meet when one requires confirmation from the other, especially when putting historical events into archaeological contexts, the two disciplines rarely are brought together on an equal footing to reconstruct those ancient cultures. Since the ancient Near East provides much written evidence to supplem…

Casting Tiamat Into Another Sphere
Among the finds from the extensive late third millennium necropolis of Dhahr Mirzbaneh and 'Ain Samiya, north-west of Jericho, was an exceptional silver goblet with repoussé decoration which generated a series of articles one decade age. It was discovered in an undisturbed chamber tomb whose other gifts–16 jars, 2 four-spouted saucer lamps, and 3 copper or bronze weapons-unequivocally date to the end of Albright's Middle Bronze I, now better defi…
