  • Debunking Deterministic Narratives of Technological Development Through Experimentation: A Critical Review of the Prehistory of Tin Bronze Alloying

Open Access•Julia Montes-Landa, Simon Timberlake et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2024

The currently accepted narrative on the prehistory of bronze alloying technology follows deterministic, outdated assumptions of technological progression that ignore the role of contextual and performance factors in the decision-making processes, thus neglecting human agency. In essence, it is expected that newer techniques were overarchingly more advanced than older ones and hence replaced them. The validity of this narrative should be challenge…

  • Copper Mining in the Bronze Age at Mynydd Parys, Anglesey, Wales

    Open Access•David A Jenkins, Simon Timberlake et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2021•References: 28

The Bronze Age in Britain is now a term often used to include both the first use of copper c . 2400 bc and also tin-bronze from c . 2100 bc , all of which required the extensive use of copper. Prehistoric mining for this metal has been identified in surface and underground workings in Parys Mine, Mynydd Parys, Anglesey, although almost all of the surface workings are now obscured by the extensive deep spoil from more recent mining in the industri…

  • Prehistoric Copper Extraction in Britain: Ecton Hill, Staffordshire

    Open Access•Simon Timberlake•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 30

Major investigations were undertaken of the Ecton Copper Mines, Staffordshire, following the discovery of hammerstones and a red deer antler tool dating to the Early Bronze Age during surface and underground exploration in the 1990s. Ecton Hill was surveyed, the distribution of hammerstone tools examined, and two identified sites of potential prehistoric mining close to the summit of the hill excavated in 2008 & 2009. Excavations at Stone Quarry …

  • An Archaeological Investigation of Early Mineworkings on Copa Hill, Cwmystwyth: New Evidence for Prehistoric Mining

    Open Access•Simon Timberlake, Roy Switsur•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1988•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In September 1986 a small excavation was done by S. T. to investigate an area of primitive-style mine-workings on Copa Hill, Cwmystwyth, Dyfed (SN816756). A small opencast and several overgrown tips associated with pebble hammers occur where the copper-rich Comet Lode outcrops on the brow of the hill. Copa Hill is within an area of seventeenth–twentieth-century lead-mine workings which extend for 1.2 km along the N side of the Ystwyth Valley (fig…
