  • Mobility of Scandinavian commodities in the Middle Ages and modern period

Open Access•Paul Picavet, Roland Dreesen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 1

The sampling of several series of whetstones from medieval sites in the northern quarter of France and Belgium has revealed the (omni-)presence of specimens originating from Norway. This origin, assumed by macroscopic observation of the rocks, has been verified by previously unpublished EDS analyses acquired using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The rock is a fine ash-grey to green-grey micaceous quartz schist, rich in flakes of muscovite…

  • Cross‐channel Connectivity

Open Access•Sibrecht Reniere, Aurélie Thiébaux et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2018•References: 19

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate cross‐Channel exchange of calcareous sandstone‐type whetstones derived from the Weald (Sussex, UK) in the Roman period. The presence of this particular type of whetstone at several Roman sites on the Continent – more specifically, in Belgium, France and the Netherlands – is reported for the first time. The morphology, geological provenance, petrographic characteristics and distribution patterns are disc…

  • Ballasting the Hanse

Open Access•W De Clercq, Roland Dreesen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 2

The discovery of a remarkable group of vividly coloured rounded cobbles in the fields and monuments of the later medieval outports of Bruges has initiated a multi-disciplinary investigation into their function, provenance, and wider economic meaning. Geological analyses demonstrate that the stones are ballast of exotic lithological nature. A substantial number consist of glacial erratics collected from cobble beaches in the Baltoscandian area. An…

  • Querns and mills during Roman times at the northern frontier of the Roman Empire (Belgium, Northern France, Southern Netherlands, Western Germany)

Open Access•Sibrecht Reniere, W De Clercq et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016

This paper presents the results of a multi-disciplinary provenance study of querns and millstones during the Roman period (1st-4th century CE) in the northern part of the Roman Empire (provinces of Gallia Belgica and Germania Inferior). Comparative petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical analysis allowed an international team of archaeologists and geologists to identify the different raw materials used for the manufacturing of querns and mi…
