A few notes in the defence of the Great Moravian market system
The recent text by J. Macháček (in print) attempts to review the debate concerning the nature of the relationship between Great Moravian centres and their hinterlands. Among other points, it also criticises the model of the Great Moravian market system that I originally developed as part of the wider economic, geographic, and political model of the Great Moravian polity (Hlavica 2023). In the following text, I will analyse Macháček’s key argument…
Archaeometry of early medieval tuyeres questions the chronology of smelting sites in the Moravian Karst
Pottery as a witness of commercialization: The case of 9 th -century ‘Great Moravia’
Identifikace a interpretace výskytu gombíků s identickou tepanou výzdobou z různých nálezových kontextů velkomoravské aglomerace Mikulčice–Kopčany
Spherical hollow buttons (in Czech gombíky, sgl. gombík) are garment accessories of the Great Moravian elites, which have been widely discussed over the past decades. Research into these artefacts, and particularly their chased decoration, has been ongoing for almost 70 years. The aim was to find analogies to their motifs and clarify their cultural origin. Research into decorative motifs is still justified if the questions it is supposed to answe…
The evolution of early medieval Moravian axe-shaped currency bars through the perspective of an archaeological experiment
The presented text attempts to assess the possibilities and limitations of processing Great Moravian currency bars (by domestic archaeologists traditionally called axe-shaped hryvnias) into the form of an end product – a tool in the form of an axe – using an archaeological experiment. In this manner, it is also testing the possibilities of the axe-shaped bars to remain in circulation as tokens of general-purpose money. The present experiment show…
Evaluation of Phosphate Analysis and the Brongers Method of Detecting Decomposed Wood, Human Tissue and Organic Goods in a Bell Beaker Grave at Těšetice-Kyjovice, Czech Republic
Investigations of a Bell Beaker grave were conducted at Těsetice-Kyjovice in Moravia, and included a trial of a geochemical phosphate analysis and Brongers method for detecting decomposed wood. The grave was well-equipped, comprising a chamber, skeleton and surrounded by a trough. The aim of this paper is to provide an interpretation of anthropogenic phosphates in the grave, their relation to the skeleton, a description of an application of Brong…
