The association between locus of control and quality of life in involuntary psychiatric treatment – the mediating effect of social inclusion
This study examines the association between locus of control (LoC) and quality of life (QoL), focusing on the mediating role of social inclusion. Survey data (n = 69) were collected from two Finnish state forensic psychiatric hospitals and analyzed using mediation analysis. Participants were in long-term involuntary care wih chronic psychotic disorders. Results show that stronger LoC and greater social inclusion are linked to higher QoL. Social i…
Optimal collaboration in services for adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders

Early Lifespan Trauma in Finnish Young Adults With an Out‐of‐Home Care Background—An Ecological Systems Perspective
Young people living in out‐of‐home care often have a history of adverse childhood experiences which are traumatic in nature and have long‐term influence on individuals. This article analyses the experiences of Finnish young adults with a history of out‐of‐home care and mental health challenges, in regard to their experienced trauma and interpretations of the traumatizing factors during their early lifespan. The ecological systems theory by Bronfe…
Factors supporting resilience during out‐of‐home care
This study aimed to identify factors supporting young people's resilience during out‐of‐home care (OOHC) in Finland, despite challenges in their lives. In our qualitative study, we applied a social‐ecological framework to understand the experiences and perspectives of young people on what helped them and the help they would have needed during OOHC. The findings indicate (1) individual characteristics and interests (positive attitude, understandin…
Elements of Communication Competence in Encountering Traumatized Adolescents in Substitute Care
Adolescents who need both child welfare services and mental health interventions have usually experienced various traumatic events in their early lifespan. The purpose of this study is to identify the elements of communication that can either empower traumatized adolescents in their rehabilitation process or become an obstacle in their recovery. The data consist of interviews of 19 young adults with a substitute care background. Their experiences…
Sleep and physical activity – the dynamics of bi-directional influences over a fortnight
Sleep duration and PA are bi-directionally linked, but only for vigorous physical activity. More time spent in VPA shortens sleep the next night, yet longer sleep duration increases VPA the next day. The results imply that a 24-h framing for the interrelations of sleep and physical activity is not sufficient - the dynamics can even extend beyond, and are activated specifically for the links between sleep duration and vigorous activity. The result…
Is It Time We Stop Discouraging Evening Physical Activity? New Real-World Evidence From 150,000 Nights
Professional and colloquial sleep hygiene guidelines advise against evening physical activity, despite meta-analyses of laboratory studies concluding that evening exercise does not impair sleep. This study is the first to investigate the association between objectively measured evening physical activity and sleep within a real-world big-data sample. A total of 153,154 nights from 12,638 individuals aged 18–60 years ( M = 40.1 SD = 10.1; 44.5% fem…
