Results of two C-Change surveys of 4997 faculty and staff in medical and social sciences are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively and presented with illustrative quotations giving voice to critical personal perceptions of the culture and efforts to improve it. The C-Change survey included 12 dimensions of the culture: Vitality; Self-Efficacy in Career Advancement; Institutional Support; Relationships/Inclusion/Trust; Values Alignment; Ethica…

The emerging international system: A European perspective
The author describes the breakdown of the international system of the mid‐twentieth century as unique in nature and consequences. The situation of bipolarity, characteristic of the Cold War years, has disappeared. Power has diffused greatly, making predictions as to what kind of international system will emerge difficult. Two models of possible developments in the international system are presented. In one, a tripolarity between the United States…

[Boer War and Vietnam Parallels]
A World Restored
IN issue of Time of January 3, 1972, President Nixon is quoted as follows: We must remember only time in history of that we have had any extended period of peace is when there has been balance of power. It is when one nation becomes more powerful in relation to its potential competitor that danger of war arises. So I believe in in which United States is powerful. I think it will be safer and better if we have strong, healthy United States, Europe…
A sea of troubles: The Mediterranean and the defence of Europe
The United States as a Global Power
Today business of America is everybody's business. If the United States proves ungovernable in the face of new pressures, then there is no hope for a world order. If the problems of racial integration prove intractable in the United States, then the prospects for their solution elsewhere are in doubt. If the problems of developing an effective and orderly system of higher education have been misjudged in the United States, then they have been mis…

Britain in the Indian ocean: International Affairs April 1966
A YEAR of intensive discussion in London on the future extent and the nature of Britain's military commitments outside Europe and the Mediterranean has so far produced only dubious generalisations on the lips of her leaders. For instance, 'Britain must remain a World Power'. This sort of statement overlooks two facts. On the one hand, Britain never was a World Power in the sense that the United States has become one, and today Britain has no inte…

I: Partners and allies
The Choices for British Defence Policy
is in the nature of alliances that when the external threat which gave them their original impetus and solidarity diminishes or is stabilised, the constituent nations become preoccupied with their status and independence of action relative to each other. So it was with the Hellenic cities, with the 18th Century coalitions against France, and now with the North Atlantic Treaty powers. Although the arguments may be conducted in terms of the most ef…
