This book examines the role of 'Europe' in defining, maintaining, constructing, and remedying sex discrimination. The author investigates the origins, institutions, and policies associated with recent
Testing the Limits of European Citizenship
European citizenship was designed to inspire greater faith in the European Union, yet women remain less favorably disposed than men to the process of integration. This article explores some likely explanations. Focusing on efforts to end xenophobia and counter male violence, the argument is made that the drive toward social justice is remarkable less for the claims being made by European women's movements than for the road on which many activists…

The Limits of Citizenship
This article addresses the paradoxical politics of heterosexism within European Union (EU) policy through a critical consideration of matrimony as the primary legitimating link between EU nationals and third‐country spouses. It also emphasizes the discrimination experienced by same‐sex couples to whom the protection and privileges of marriage are unavailable and questions efforts to extend state‐sanctioned unions to same‐sex partners. Indeed, it …
Heterosexism i Europeiska unionen
In their efforts to end discrimination, lesbian and gay movements throughout Europé appear to have relinquished their critical disdain of the dominant world that excludes them and asked instead for its acceptance. Once analyzed in ways that exposed its exclusive and oppressive dimensions, the family is now presumed to afford a path to egalitarianism. The affirmation of family has entailed, among other approaches, campaigns for lesbian and gay mar…
Disability Pornography
This work provides a critical exploration of various media that both sexualize and ridicule women and girls whose health and relative immobility make them especially vulnerable to sexual abuse. More specifically, pornography made of disabled women and girls is the prominent focus. The article considers how, like all pornography, but in its own way, this genre contributes to the second-class safety and status of all women, and women with disabilit…
Feminism and Legislative Redress
This article provides an historical overview of the politicization of sexual harassment and legislative remedy in the United States and Sweden. While the American state formally recognizes the existence of sexual harassment and has taken steps against it, the Swedish state has been reluctant to provide legal remedy. This difference can be attributed to Sweden's centralized state and the strength of labor, which had the organizational capacity to …

Triangles and Tribulations
This article explores the politics of "reclamation." Its focus is on pink and black triangles, currently used as symbols for gay and lesbian pride and liberation. Previously, these same identifiers were worn by those destined for annihilation during the Holocaust. I suggest that, in [re]claiming these markers, activists, however well intentioned, run a path dangerously close to the denial of history
