Determinants of Trust in Institutions in Times of Crisis: Survey‐Based Evidence from the European Union
We employ Eurobarometer micro‐level data on trust in institutions, in order to explore its determinants, considering socio‐demographic characteristics, and macroeconomic indicators. The main contribution of our analysis is the investigation of the potential impact of sovereign credit rating episodes and the adoption of bail‐out programmes. We find that trust in institutions is substantially eroded in countries that experience downgrade episodes a…

Testing Uncertainty's Effect in Real Options with Multiple Capital Goods: Testing Uncertainty's Effect
The irreversible investment theory with heterogeneous capital predicts a negative relationship between uncertainty and the investment extensive margin. We empirically explore this prediction using plant-level data for investment across multiple fixed assets, and employ a discrete ordered choice model. Our results indicate that uncertainty, even after controlling for financial constraints, induces a negative effect on the extensive margin, thereby…

Evidence for the Existence of Under-Reporting Bias in Observed Terrorist Activity: The Message in Press Freedom Status Transitions
For years now, it seems almost obligatory for every study on terrorism to make a reference to the potential bias of under-reporting. Despite substantial progress in the applied study of terrorism, the question of under-reporting refuses to lie down. In this paper we propose a method that allows assessing its presence. In particular, we expect that under-reporting bias will decrease (increase) for countries experiencing an improvement (deteriorati…
The Devil You Know but Are Afraid to Face: Underreporting Bias and its Distorting Effects on the Study of Terrorism
Despite substantial progress in the applied study of terrorism, one important methodological issue has remained underdeveloped. Multiple warnings have urged for caution as the validity of extant findings may have been distorted from the well-known “devil” of underreporting bias. Yet, extant research has fallen short from addressing the issue in a systematic fashion. This article discusses a way for assessing whether underreporting is present by u…
Regional Effects of Terrorism on Tourism in Three Mediterranean Countries
A consumer-choice theoretical model is developed to test the regional effects of terrorism on competitors' market shares in the tourism sector where involved countries enjoy significant tourism activities but are subject to a high frequency of terrorist attacks. Using data for three Mediterranean countries—Greece, Israel, and Turkey—for the period from January 1991 to December 2000, results show significant own and spillover effects of terrorism …
