  • The Impact of Autonomous Truck Technology on US Interstate Trade

Open Access•Taejun Mo, Sandy Dall’erba et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2026

Recent advances in autonomous and semi‐autonomous vehicle technologies promise substantial cost savings for goods shipped by truck. In this study, we quantify the impacts of these transport cost reductions on the US interstate trade using a structural gravity model of domestic trade. Based on projected cost savings from the widespread adoption of self‐driving technologies, we estimate significant increases in total interstate trade value. State‐l…

  • Difference-in-differences with endogenous externalities

Open Access•Sandy Dall’erba, André Luis Squarize Chagas et al.•ARTICLE•Papers of the Regional Science…•2025•References: 7

The difference-in-difference (DID) framework is now a well-accepted method in quasi-experimental research. However, DID does not consider treatment-induced changes to a network linking treated and control units. The endogenous network DID methodology we offer here (ENDID) controls for the direct and indirect role of the treatment on any network member. In addition, we control for the sensitivity of the network to the treatment and its endogeneity…

  • When one cannot bypass the byproducts

Open Access•Xiang Gao, Sandy Dall’erba et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2022

While packaging is praised for reducing waste of perishable food products, packaging waste is a growing concern. Its least recyclable type, plastics waste, is increasingly polluting the marine environment and many developing countries are now refusing to take the waste from developed countries. Before responsibility can be established, one has to identify the key producers and consumers. This paper adjusts the packaging waste satellite account in…

  • The impact and externalities of natural disasters on local tax revenue in Colombia

    Jhorland Ayala‐García, Sandy Dall’erba et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper studies the impact of natural disasters on tax revenue across Colombian municipalities. We follow a two-step approach to evaluate how a municipality’s tax revenue depends on natural disasters taking place both locally and in its trade partners. In the first step, we estimate a gravity model of bilateral trade and construct a matrix of estimated bilateral trade shares, allowing us to measure the strength of the economic relationships be…

  • Understanding heterogeneous spatial production externalities as a missing link between land-use planning and urban economic futures

Haozhi Pan, Tianren Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2020•Cited by: 12•References: 5

Land-use planning influences economic performance as it can intervene with location-specific and heterogeneous production externalities. This paper examines the impacts of heterogeneous externalities on local employment growth using a panel model framework with block-level land-use data inventory for Chicago. Cross-industry spillovers provide positive impacts on growth, but the mechanisms behind them differ across sectors and spatial scales. Impr…

  • The effects of diesel price on regional trade in the USA

    Open Access•Wojciech W Szewerniak, Yilan Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2018•References: 6

The abundant trade literature offers little insight on how diesel prices affect intranational trade. We fill this gap by calibrating a structural gravity model to recent U.S. interstate trade data. We discover that, for any distance, the elasticity of trade to diesel prices is much greater for low-valued commodities than for high-valued commodities. The general equilibrium result shows that a nationwide diesel price increase leads to heterogeneou…

  • Meta-analysis of the impact of European Union Structural Funds on regional growth

    Sandy Dall’erba, Fang Fang•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2015•Cited by: 20•References: 10

Meta-analysis of the impact of European Union Structural Funds on regional growth. Regional Studies. This paper offers a meta-regression analysis of the controversial impact of European Union Structural Funds on the growth of the recipient regions. It identifies the factors that explain the heterogeneity in the size of 323 estimates of their impact recorded in 17 econometric studies. Heterogeneity comes from the publication status, the period exa…

  • Spatial Distribution of Employment in Hermosillo, 1999–2004

    Open Access•Liz Rodríguez-Gámez, Liz Ileana Rodríguez Gámez et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 29

While the suburbanisation process has been well documented in some large cities of several developed countries, much less attention has been devoted to the case of small and middle-sized cities in developing countries. This article focuses on an exploratory spatial data analysis to investigate the location of the central business district (CBD) and other employment centres in Hermosillo, Mexico. The results reveal the significant presence of spat…

  • European Regional Structural Funds

    Open Access•Florence Bouvet, Sandy Dall''Erba et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2010•Cited by: 45•References: 33

The allocation of Structural Funds, the most important component of the European Union (EU) cohesion policy, is subject to intense bargaining between national governments and across layers of political governance. Using Structural Funds data for each cohesion objective over 1989–99, we examine which variables, economic and political, determine the actual funds allocation. We test our hypotheses with a Tobit model that accounts for the two‐stage a…

  • European Cohesion Policy * Willem Molle

    Sandy Dall’erba, S Dall'erba•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2007

Willem Molle's most recent book, European Cohesion Policy, is a superb volume. The book is the only available manuscript that goes so deeply into the principles, practices and current challenges of European cohesion policies. I see his book as one of the (too) few pieces of work that try to bring together academic scholars and policy-makers despite the lack of consideration of real-world technicalities from the first group and the negligence in d…
