Moral metaphor, metonymic causation
This article explores the double metaphoric and metonymic use of the Danish word plet (“stain” or “spot”) in discourse about shame and moral judgment. The present contribution addresses the notion of metaphoricity and discusses different positions in relation to this complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon. Generally, the notion of metaphoricity is used when metaphor is not considered a binary category anymore, or when the status of an expression as metaphorical is at stake (e.g. in discussions of metaphor identification). This paper investigates an unexplored indexical dimension inherent in the mapping structure of metaphor. Ecological Cognition and Metaphor
In this article, we argue for the need to further incorporate the study of metaphor with the newest tendencies within cognitive science. We do so by presenting an ecological view of cognition as a skull-and-body-transcending activity that is deeply entangled with the environment. Partisan optimism and political bargaining
Partisan voters are optimistic about electoral outcomes: their estimates of the probability of electoral success for their party are substantially higher than the average among the electorate. This has large potential implications for political bargaining. The timing of terrorist attacks
I use a simple optimal stopping model to derive policy relevant insights on the timing of one-shot attacks by small autonomous terrorist units or “lone wolf” individuals. A main insight is that an increase in proactive counterterrorism measures can lead to a short term increase in the number of attempted terrorist attacks because it makes it more risky for existing terrorist units to pursue further development of capabilities. A 3.5year diary study
Forty-five participants described and rated two events each week during their first term at university. After 3.5 years, we examined whether event characteristics rated in the diary predicted remembering, reliving, and life story importance at the follow-up. After the 2009 referendum on a proposed change to the Danish Law of Succession, it was widely claimed that the early publication of exit poll results changed the rate of turnout and eventually the outcome. We investigate this claim and contribute to the wider debate on the implications of exit polls by setting up and analyzing a formal model. Intelligence about transnational terrorism is generally gathered by national agencies. We investigated whether memories are selected for the life story based on event characteristics. Sixty-one students completed weekly diaries over their first term at university. They described, dated and rated two events each week. Three months after the end of the term they completed an unexpected memory test. Optimal counterterrorism and the recruitment effect of large terrorist attacks
We analyze a simple dynamic model of the interaction between terrorists and authorities. Our primary aim is to study optimal counterterrorism and its consequences when large terrorist attacks lead to a temporary increase in terrorist recruitment.
